OpenAI says China ran a covert campaign to turn Americans against data centers, but used facts that happen to be true

China is building datacenters in the water powered by offshore wind turbines. If they solved the issue of salt water corrosion, then that seems way more practical as it won't need to use tons of fresh water, won't increase energy bills, and doesnt take up valuable land where people want to live.

I am curious why US datacenters choose to locate their stuff in places that are hot (eg. Georgia), has water scarcity issues (California), and densely populated places where people want to live (near suburbs in Maryland, Virginia, etc).
I also wonder this. There's something they aren't letting us know

I suppose it makes a change from lobbyists and/or Israel dictating American policy. At least this action seems to have some upside for the American people than everything else that comes out the White House these days.

Anyone who believes giving control of the defining industry of the 21st century to an authoritarian regime that keeps millions of its citizens in slave-labor genocide camps shouldn't be left alone without adult supervision.

Rather major problem to solve, one we've struggled with since we managed to refine metals.
Admittedly, sinking datacenters to the bottom of the ocean makes more sense than shooting them into space (which seems to be a bad idea the tech CEO just don't want to drop... must be nice government grants involved or something).[/quote]

The answer to almost everything in life is money.
Probably cheaper to bribe officials then having to pay for your own infrastructure.

There are far more problems facing a datacenter in the deep ocean than there are in NEO.
And it's far more than Musk building datacenters in space. Along with a half-dozen other Western firms, the CCP is currently giving tens of billions of dollars to two separate Chinese firms to do this, with launches already scheduled.

Why do some people choose to live in a false-fact fantasy world rather than reality? Local officials approve these projects because of the enormous benefits they bring to local communities:

KHCH local news, OK: "Google's data center transformed the local tax base by boosting the Pryor Public Schools district's overall net assessed property value from $80 million in 2007 to $1 billion. This surge in property values is largely due to the heavy taxation of massive data center buildings and the personal property housed inside..."

KOTV local news, OK reports the surge in funding allowed schools to raise teacher salaries, lower class sizes dramatically, buy new school equipment, and fund free lunch programs. Pryor County is now one of the few counties in the state that collects more in tax revenues than its due in state aid:

I've been watching some historical vids, and apparently even North Koreans think Chinese are liars and deceivers. If your closest ally thinks you are a liar...

Btw, no country should be trusted if it runs government-controlled bot army. The bot army is like a testimony to desire to lie and deceive. I just wish people looked at China through this lens because it tells about them more than everything they have said.
I thought that at least covid could help the West see China as it is, but no: I often see people blaming Biden or Trump for mishandling covid and rarely one great country and one great lab in Wuhan that was managed horribly and eventually released a virus that killed millions. Not only that, they kept quiet when they should have closed the borders and announced to the entire world that they have a problem.
As the classic said: "don't trust China, China is an a$$horr"

Yeah, and electricity, computer, and the Internet have horrible negative impacts also. And don't forget planes, trains, and automobiles. We should definitely take an example from the Amish, and reject all this stuff.
Nice deflection from the actual issues. Did it make you angry that he's correct?

So what you are saying is that the US controlling this "defining industry of the 21st century" is bad. We all knew this.

The US controlling industry is what saved Europe from Nazi domination in WW2, what saved all Europe from USSR domination in the Cold War. It's the reason you're able to go on message forums like this and freely criticize whatever you wish -- including the US.

If China seizes control of this industry, however, the US would become another Albania or Romania, full of pig farmers and barley growers, and posts like yours would have you in a CCP reeducation camp so fast your head would spin.

The most damning detail in this whole story is that the Chinese influence operation specifically instructed ChatGPT not to mention Xi Jinping...

They weren't trying to spread propaganda for China, they were just trying to make Americans angry about data centers. Which worked, apparently, because 71% of Americans were already angry about data centers entirely on their own.

Call them what they are. The only thing all of you should be really upset about. They are AI surveillance centres. They are using these to spy on all of you.
As bigreddyed said above:
The part I find interesting, is that they noticed the chats. This wasn't some high bandwidth, resource draining attack on ChatGPT. It was ordinary chat sessions...
Think about that for a moment...

China wants to "corner the market" on AI data centers so they can have total control over it, just like
they do right now with Lithium & various other rare earth metals, pharmaceuticals, electronics and what not.
They already have MASSIVE solar farms built out in the desert areas of China. Not sure where they will get the water, but they don't care.
Yes, but why would they have to actually do anything to corner any of our markets right now? It seems that we're doing everything possible to shoot ourselves in the foot in every way right now. We have no science going on here anymore. NIH, Universities defunded. It's all theirs for the taking.

Because dishonest journalists here in the US have been spreading that same CCP propaganda for a few years now. Nor is this the first such Chinese operation we've found ... several prominent anti-AI groups in the US have been found to be funded by CCP-linked sources.

It's funny that you cling to something that happened in 1940s and refuse to accept the reality of having a fascist pedophile as a president today.

"what saved all Europe from USSR domination in the Cold War" - pffff hahahahaha. so delusional.

As for China controlling things, you can thank Trump for that too with his "deals". He made a complete fool of himself recently when he went to China. They literally mocked him openly. A clown through and through. You can also thank Trump for turning the EU away from the US and getting closer to China with his stupid tariffs which YOU pay as taxes and higher prices (he even openly lied about them on live TV and you believed him) and his "everybody is an enemy besides Putin and Xi Jinping" rhetoric.

But hey, talk about your pedo king some more and how you idolize him for sexually assaulting women and deploying gestapo and the army in the streets (because that doesn't scream far right fascist nazi in your mid).

"what saved all Europe from USSR domination in the Cold War" - pffff hahahahaha. so delusional.
Now you're denying the Cold War ever happened, or that the expressly-stated goal of the USSR was to dominate all Europe?

As for China controlling things, you can thank Trump for that too with his "deals" .. You can also thank Trump for turning the EU away from the US
It's clear you think Trump the most powerful man on earth, with his ability to control literally every event on the globe.

...with his stupid tariffs which YOU pay as taxes and higher prices
Even at the height of those tariffs, here in the US we enjoy lower prices, lower tax rates, and a far higher standard of living than do those living in Eastern-European hellholes like Albania and Romania.

...for deploying gestapo [sic] and the army in the streets (because that doesn't scream far right fascist nazi in your mid).
Learn what words mean. Most of the nations on earth have used the military domestically; nor does that imply fascism. Unless you think these nations are fascist also:

Jun 14, 2026 (4 hours ago): Switzerland to deploy 2,000-5,000 military personnel to prevent G7 rioting.
Apr 2026: Ireland deploys army to clear protests.
Aug 2025:
Belgium eyes using army to fight Brussels drug violence
May 2024: France to deploy army to quell riots

Fascism has always been a political doctrine of the far Left. This is historical fact.

Ah yes, let's talk about the cold war more because that will make people talk less about pedo trump and his failures and fascist friends.

"It's clear you think Trump the most powerful man on earth" - the president of the US is generally the most powerful position on the planet, but trump is just a clown who's been playing "lick the arshole" of every other leader in the world.

I also love how you pretend to know what's happening in eastern europe and you are trying to say that the "US is better than poor countries" (even though on many statistics it's much MUCH worse). it's proof that you know things are bad in the US and you are looking for anything to cling on. next thing you'll tell is that the US is doing better than North Korea.

You are not saying that tariffs were good, you are just saying that Moldova or Hungary are doing worse than the US :) - this is just pathetic. FYI those "shitholes" don't do school shooting drills. As for Romania, it's a much better place than the US from so many standpoints

"here in the US we enjoy lower prices" -- lying is bad, m'kay? or are you going to just cherry pick a few things like gasoline, which is indeed cheaper than in most of the world.

"nor does that imply fascism" - it 100% does imply fascism based on the context. deploying the army doesn't automatically make it a fascist country, but when you do it like trump did then it 100% does.

You seem to think that context is irrelevant and quote some random riots that you have zero clue about. again you were caught lying or deflecting.

Let's use the 2024 French one as an example: "The French government has said it will deploy troops to secure ports and the main airport in the Pacific territory of New Caledonia as unrest continues."
Do you know even what New Caledonia is and where it is located? Or what happened in 2024? You clearly don't, but you still try to use it to justify fascism in the US. Lying and disinformation is all you know.

"Fascism has always been a political doctrine of the far Left. This is historical fact." - just because you say so doesn't make I true. ALL history books and everybody and their dog knows that it's the far right, especially the nazis which you've been using their propaganda before they came into power as "proof" instead of what they actually did.

You been proven wrong so many times that I'm starting to think you have severe memory problems. It's no longer just about you defending fascist pedo trump and nazis. Are you on drugs?

Ah yes, let's talk about the cold war more because that will make people talk less about pedo trump and his failures and fascist friends.
Fascism is rising in Europe today most of all. Romania's authoritarian government fabricating a legal case against the winner of a presidential election, to allow them to annul the results is a sterling example on this.

... trump is just a clown who's been playing "lick the arshole" of every other leader in the world.
LOL, you can't even keep to a consistent message. One minute Trump's being rudely offensive to our allies, the next he's sucking up to them. It's a serious problem you have.

You are not saying that tariffs were good, you are just saying that Moldova or Hungary are doing worse
No, the tariffs were good. Getting foreign nations to pay a share of your taxes, while simultaneously supporting local industry is a double-win ... which is probably why the EU uses tariffs so extensively. One difference about Trump's tariffs: he agreed to drop them against nations which agreed to do so reciprocally ...that's why we now pay **lower** tariffs on Japanese products, including autos, than we did before.

"here in the US we enjoy lower prices" -- lying is bad, m'kay?
Was that a joke, or are you truly so ignorant of world economics? The EU VAT alone adds up to 27% to the cost of your goods, which is why you pay so much more for -- to name just one item -- computer components than we do here.

Do you know even what New Caledonia is
I certainly do know. And you chose to ignore the other examples as they all occurred on domestic soil, instead of an overseas territory -- not that this matters. Was Germany's deployment of troops on the streets of Paris not a fascist act?

It's an even more embarrassing blunder when France has done the same domestically as well:

Operation Sentinelle (2015 – Present): Formed in the wake of the 2015 terror attacks, the government deploys up to 7,000 active-duty soldiers across the country during heightened security threats....

Yellow Vest Protests (2019): Following intense rioting, looting, and arson, thousands of armed soldiers were deployed to protect government and public spaces...

Major International Summits: France regularly uses the military to assist in severe border lockdowns and crowd control during high-profile gatherings, such as the G7 Summit....

Most nations on earth have used the military to quell riots. US President Johnson (one of the most liberal Presidents on record) did it 11 times in 11 different areas. Stop embarrassing yourself with these absurd arguments.

But you've never disputed it, except with nonsense arguments like "Hitler didn't ban guns, because after he banned guns, shut down gun clubs, and used gun records to round up and imprison or exile any gun-owning opponents, he then relaxed gun laws ... but only for good Nazi Party Members."

The Nazis were a far Left labor movement. Period. The people who elected them into office, and the people cheering Hitler in the streets weren't conservatives -- they were far-Left zealots, excited over Hitler's promises of an ultra-Leftist government. When Hitler gained ultimate power, he did what Mao, Stalin, Pol Pot, and all other authoritarian Lefttists did -- lost interest in politics, except for retaining power.

"Romania's authoritarian government fabricating a legal case against the winner of a presidential election" -- congrats on being fooled by russian propaganda. But as a trump follower I would expect nothing else.

"No, the tariffs were good. Getting foreign nations to pay a share of your taxes, while simultaneously supporting local industry is a double-win" -- None of that happened. you are lying again. But hey, lying is what you love to do. Taxes are paid by americans and this is obvious to anybody with half a brain who can read statistics and the "local industry" are majorly down in the US (from manufacturing to farming)

"The EU VAT alone adds up to 27% to the cost of your good" -- and? what is your point? product prices are still better than in the US and of much higher quality too because of the EU regulations. FYI 27% is just in Hungary. Congrats on showing to us again that you don't know anything about the EU.

"which is probably why the EU uses tariffs so extensively" -- congrats on falling for trump's lies.
