 I have a PC-IV which is 2.4 GHz with 1 GB RAM. I have XP-SP2 as OS.

What is the optimum RAM that I can install for this processor speed to get the best performance. How does one determine the optimum RAM for a given processor (CPU) speed?

The short answer is that "one doesn't"` The RAM that you can use is determined by the motherboard, not the CPU. I guessing what CPU you have is a "Pentium 4 @2.4Ghz".
The amount of RAM that would be usable is also determined by the OS. 32 bit XP will allow you to use a maximum of about 3.25 GB.

In most cases about all that's necessary with XP is 2GB. That's about optimum. The maximum allowable installed RAM is also determined by the motherboard. This can be as low as 1GB, so you must provide the mobo info in addition to your CPU.

:)Thanks for the replies. I managed to get some info about my computer using Everest Benchmarking software. Couldn't understand most of it. I would be grateful if you could please tell me what would be the max RAM for this motherboard.

Also I would like to know if there is a slot for a Gaming Card. One vendor told me there isn't and that I should throw away my motherboard. I just play one game: Need For Speed (right now UG2). Could you please suggest a suitable intermediate gaming card if my PC supports it? Latest are very expensive.

I hope the information is sufficient.

I would be pleased if you could tell me how to determine the maximum RAM as I would like to upgrade the RAM of my laptop and office PC as well.

As CaptainCranky stated, the maximum amount of RAM a 32 bit operating system can read is 3.25GB. Secondly, you have to check your Motherboard for open RAM slots, usually you'll have one or two. Also, make sure the RAM is compatible. Go to www.crucial.com and check up your system.

As far as I remember that motherboard supported 2GB of RAM (i.e. maximum). So I hope that answers your question. I haven't been able to find any links about this board's specs, so I'll be glad if someone can improve on that. Regards

for a 32 bit operating system, the max ram you can install is 4gb. The system can only access up to around 3.25 gb. if you go 64 bit, the limit is substantially more up to around 192gb for win 7 pro.
