TL;DR: In its latest Overwatch Spotlight stream, Blizzard Entertainment revealed several key updates for Overwatch 2 including an unexpected name change. The company also confirmed that the game will reset to Season 1 each year, introducing fresh storylines and new characters.

Blizzard is officially dropping the "2" from Overwatch 2, signaling a renewed focus on evolving the storyline and enhancing gameplay rather than releasing sequels disconnected from earlier titles. The company believes that introducing a fully connected annual storyline will deepen player engagement over time.

Commenting on the name change, director Aaron Keller said that the game is "much more than a digit" and expressed confidence that it will "keep growing, keep surprising, and keep bringing players together" in the future. He added that the slight change in the name will not affect gameplay in any way.

Overwatch is set for a major overhaul with the Season 1 update on February 10. Titled The Reign of Talon, the first chapter will introduce five new heroes, including Fika the Jetpack Cat, marking the largest influx of heroes since the game's 2023 debut. Fika will be joined by four other felines: Domina, Mizuki, Emre, and Anran.

Overall, 10 new heroes are expected to be added in Season 1, with the next five introduced gradually over the rest of the season. Afterward, Blizzard plans to add one new hero per subsequent season. The developer also promised several quality-of-life updates and new in-game events later this year.

Overwatch is officially available on Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. It is also technically compatible with the Switch 2, though a dedicated Switch 2 edition is scheduled for Season 2 in April, potentially including new features, additional maps, gameplay improvements, and more.

Overwatch 2 faced several setbacks following its 2023 launch, including the cancellation of the promised PvE Hero mode due to development bottlenecks and a lukewarm response to the initial story missions. Rather than continuing work on PvE, Blizzard shifted its focus to the core competitive PvP mode, emphasizing a steady cadence of new heroes, maps, and seasonal updates.

What an absolute dumpster fire. I deleted my venerable Blizzard account, with constant activity and a big fat purchase history, the moment I found out OW2 was replacing OW1 and now... now they have the stones to rename it back to Overwatch without being able to offer Overwatch. No matter the name, the best they can offer you for your time is an inferior game named after it's vastly superior predecessor. I wonder how many meetings they had before they were able to admit it's garbage. That's a loooong walk back and they can't afford it. The best they can do is try to rename it to evoke memories of better gameplay.

It has been years since I have used my Blizzard account. And even longer since I played Overwatch.
And I don't miss any.

I don’t understand this.

They identified that the real strength of OW was the awesome characters and that players wanted more of the character dev to happen in the game instead of just cool shorts.

More game modes (ala the junkenstein event) with progression and some development in the game. They didn’t do that, although they tried but couldn’t get anything fun within their time and budget allowance. (Not may titles have more money than OW coming in, so what gives?) So they reduced to 5 on 5 matches and added a 2 to the name. They also stopped making cool short movies I think. I don’t know by that time I was gone. That was the appeal of the game.

Now they are taking the 2 off the name, committed to cool movies and out of game character dev, and releasing a character pack of cats? Maybe the article is mistaken and only one of the new heroes is a cat?

Either way, Wtf MSBlizzard!?

Should have given it a subtitle instead of removing the version number, like Overwatch: Rise of the Anti-Heroes, "featuring alternate versions of the Heroes as Villains, from other timelines". Y'know, a new, original IP: a spinoff, rather than retreading old ground. Or hell, do something unorthdox, like Overwatch -.

You don't get to launch Overwatch twice. That's been done already.

Cute marketing tactic, but it’s good to see they are finally releasing heroes on a decent cadence.

The lack of PvE still sucks, but they’re clearly trying to do -something- with the remainder of the game. OW is still fun IMO, and it beats the brakes off of Marvel Rivals, which is it’s only real competition.
