Problem connecting 2 computers with crossover

I know connecting two computers through a crossover cable is suppose to be easy and i have done it before but for some reason this is not working and i could use some trouble shooting ideas. I have both computers set up with different IPs and they are both on workgroup "WORKGROUP." In the bottom right by the clock the local area connection icons say they are both connected. However when i browse my network on either computer the other computer is not listed under "WORKGROUP." I have tried setting each DNS server to the IP of that computer, but still the same results. When i try to ping one computer from the other's cmd line, i get request timed out. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.
