Problem connecting to Internet

Hi all, I need some help here:
I just built a new computer, and the first time I fired it up everything was fine until I tried to connect on line. No go! I have built several PC's and this is the first time this has happened to me.
The DSL connection, router and cable are OK - they work fine on my other computer. There is a steady light at the LAN port end When plugged into the new motherboard. At first I suspected a faulty LAN port and sent the board back, but they tested it for three days online with no problems.
So it would appear that I have a configuration problem - this computer is simply not talking to the modem - but I cannot find it.
I tried setting up the connection again with no result. But when I try to repair the connection Windows gives the message: "Failed to query TCP/IP settings of the connection..." Yet TCP/IP is enabled.

My system specs are:
Motherboard: Asus MN3A-32 Deluxe 790FX
Processor: AMD Phenom Quad core 9850 2.5Ghz
RAM: Corsair 2Gb DDR2 1066MHz
Graphics: Asus Radeon 4850 512Mb
System: Windows XP Pro
