Programs Having to close upon starting in Windows XP

Started experiencing most programs having to close upon starting about 2 months ago. Programs include Micorsoft Outlook, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Irfanview, and vuescan. Once restarted all programs run without incident. For example, I open Outlook and click on a message, go to respond and get an "experienced a problem and had to shut down" message (see attached pdf). Or, I open vuescan, it abruptly closes and I restart without incident.

I have run Avira, Malwarebytes, Malwarebytes rootkit, and Spybot. Checked to see that I've not run out of pagefile (not a problem). I have replaced my ram.

Any thoughts on what might be causing this? Tests to run?

Problem is resolved. I removed SPYBOT. I was reading some reviews on Spybot and decided to replace it. Since uninstalling Spybot I have not had the problem.
