Quantum Break on PC requires Windows 10, DirectX 12

What is great about it? Apart from DX12? Serious question... I've read loads of articles and cannot for the life of me think of something that compels me to want it or think it is an upgrade.
if you like gaming then win 10 does give you a small boost to your framerate. it also handles software and UI hangs and crashes much better. the new CMD, copy windows and task manager are a big improvement over what win 7 has. it also manages wireless connections much better. and did I mention just how snappy the new UI feels? you also have better multitasking and high DPI support.

there are many improvements, but casual users aren't going to see them immediately. it's like asking what browser they like most when they don't even know that internet explorer is a browser.

If you don't want to install windows 10 then don't buy it. No one is forcing the game or windows 10 on you.
Well no, M$ isn't "forcing" Windows 10 on you, but they are coming pretty damned close.

They chose to abandon their largest current user base, those with Windows 7, and only permit the game to run on Windows 10. When aimed at the weak minded, that's pretty darn aggressive "marketing".

FWIW, a great many of their own property games, such as "Flight Simulator 2004", (fairly early XP era), run without a hitch on Windows 7, without so much as a compatibility setting change.

Yet other publisher's software didn't fare nearly as well with the introduction of Windows 7.

Now, is M$ screwing with us or not? My vote goes to, "without a doubt".

Heheh... whining and trolling... best pursuits ever... and lets be clear - MS couldn't really care less how many PC sales they make with this game, it's just another way to push Windows 10 - any profits they make will come from the XBOX version.

Those saying "bad idea, noone will buy it" are missing the point - MS doesn't care!! They want as many people using Windows 10 as possible as soon as possible...

Once EVERYONE is using Windows 10 (or everyone except crankytroll, who will be using XP), it will be far easier for MS to develop future software (and hardware maybe) that will only have to cater to 1 OS - remember, their main profits come from the corporate world... PC game sales are a drop in the water...

High DPI support sounds good. Forgot about that.

I use process explorer which I find much better than Win 10 task manager anyway. Not had UI responsiveness issues on Win 7 in any noticeable way (I don't remember anything annoying). Wireless, guess I'd have to compare to see what you mean.

Overall seems pretty minor. 2 things then - DPI and DX12.

Let's now factor in the cons. Not knowing what software no longer works (many games don't). Checking which hardware drivers are available are two. Both of which are pretty hefty negatives compared to everything you listed.

for someone like me who uses the cmd window fairly often (making application builds using Maven and other programming work), the changes they made help a lot. (resizing, easy copy-paste, etc). also the ability to pause while copying files is invaluable when you have multiple tasks that use the HDD/SSD heavily. I also use the multiple desktops a lot and it's nice to not have to install third party software for it. I can keep my work in one desktop and anything else in another.

Let's not forget the fact that it's a FREE upgrade, and will be the OS that MS continues to support in the future... And you can always run compatibility mode for anything that "doesn't run in Windows 10"... I've yet to find anything that runs in Win7/8 that doesn't run in Win 10 as well with just a bit of tweaking at most...

Nice, and so the flood gates slowly open to the next gen games. DirectX 12 is a developers tool more than a consumer one so it will take time for the games to be made with the tool to hit the market, bu it will be a huge leap forward when it does.
This whole windows X thing reminds me of when the phone was introduced and people were afraid of it and didn't want anything to do with one.
I guess all new steps in tech are that way. Some like change and some don't.

Man you get what you pay for if you want to be protected and up to date you would upgrade. Windows 10 is not much different than Windows 7 just faster, secure, with better option's I get that if somethings not broke than don't fix it (Windows 7) & I always speak for myself it was time for me to switch to Windows 10 from the only operating system iv'e ever used windows 7 Just felt like time but how are they trying to screw you when its free?

I think were all forgetting something very important here, piracy is clearly killing the PC gaming industry, it has nothing to do with forcing you to upgrade to Windows 10 to get full advantage of DX12, even if Windows 7 could technically be updated to the new API standard. When Vista did it with DX10 it made sense, the OS was not based entirely on XP like Windows 10 is based on 8.1/7/Vista, Microsoft is just upset with how poorly sales are despite the hype they attempted to generate towards Windows 10. So they turn their attention towards gamers, those of us without the choice if we want to stay up to date with the latest games and new features WILL be FORCED to switch over, those saying **** like "Stop crying and just don't buy it." just don't realize this is the beginning of the end for gamers on the now "Old" OS, deemed so by Microsoft and Microsoft alone. I'm at odds with whether to hold the developer at fault, to a certain extent, yes you can solely based on the fact they don't wish to spend time porting the game over to DX11, which in all fairness makes sense, they want to release a single version of their title designed to look as good as it can, this is a good thing. Microsoft not developing an update for Windows 7 to support DX12, that I can more confidently say is the **** move.

You say it's a **** move, I say it's marketing genius. :)
That doesn't mean I agree with it, but I do appreciate it for what it is.

This one point I disagree with. People still spend money on games. Spreading the wealth around till each share doesn't support game development is the negative impact. There is too many developing hands (Independent developers included) reaching into the cookie jar.

Yeah, I think a bigger detriment to game development is 'indie' developers that are clueless about what making a great, bug free game involves and thinks they can jump in and grab cash because it looks so easy. I am looking at you Studio Wildcard and all your third world cronies in bed with you.

Many of the same type of comments came from people who bought Windows 8. And yet it was a dog which M$ couldn't push out the door. So, why did they like it? In that case, most likely because they spent hard earned money for it, and couldn't admit they were wrong.

So, M$ winds up with too much stigma on its hands to get rid of any OS also named "8".

Then they make a big propaganda move by calling the next OS, "Windows 10". Ijn the mean time, they've added features from Win 7, back into it. (To appease, or "boondoggle" the desk top user, if you will).

So, if you're content with Windows 10 reporting to M$ every time you fart or pick your nose, I say, "go with God's grace, and may God have mercy on your soul" (PS, M$ will now sell that info to the drug manufacturers, so they can help you too).

First of all, I'm about 99% sure M$ could have updated Win 7 to, at the very least, incorporate DX-12. Which pretty much makes DX-12 just another arm twisting to promote Win 10

If you're happy with it, so be it. I'd post articles on much Windows 10 spies on you, but I figure you''d be too lazy to read it, you're too smug running it, and too brainwashed to admit it . So why bother?

Woot, perpetual complaining! (y)
I mean really, isn't that what tech forums are for? "Boo, hoo, I have a virus, etcetera, ad naseum, blah, blah, blah.

Why, I joined simply to troll your complaints...:p No wait, that's not right, I was here first.:D

That damned cranky, he always lets out the clutch on his typewriter, before he puts his mind in gear. You'd think the noobs complaining about me would be enough. But nooooo. It's not over being all about me, or complaining about me, until I, capital I, f***ing say so! < (Boy I'd like to strangle the creep who wrote that... :grrrrr: ).

@cliffordcooley ...... I'm pretty sure all I managed to do with that last paragraph, was make myself fit in better around here..;) I'll have more in common.

People complains if it's DX12, complain if it's DX9. Complaining seems to be all that matter. Actually even that the game gets a PC version is worth complaining. As for the game, it sure is going to be a great port, Remedy has made some amazing games on Pc.

Since games are made on PCs and then ported to the console, the PC version will always be closer (if not identical) to the original creation than any console version is. Console versions will always run exactly the same on all consoles because they are identical (ie all x box ones are the same, all PS4s are the same) but the PC version will have to have more sliders and radio buttons added to the settings interface to accommodate different levels of hardware but won't need to be cut back to the console it is offered on.
