I got fooled by the Firefox/update flash trick. Got Malware 2 days ago. Ran MBAM on the 26th. Just found you guys today and I've completed the 6 steps. My machine is still sluggish, I'm getting Google redirects, and the MSFT "may not have appropriate permission" popups regularly when I try and open programs. Lots of problems and diminishing patience. Please help.

Initial MBAM from 10/26/2010 for reference:

Issues with Security Check

Bobbye,
Thanks for the reply. I used JavaRa successfully. I updated the JRE successfully. I clicked your clink to Security Check and downloaded to Desktop. I dblclicked the .exe file and got an error message - "Windows cannot find "SecurityCheck\SecurityCheck.bat" Make sure you typed...

I downloaded again and got the same error.

I ran the ESET NOD32 OAV scan (over 4 hours). Those results are below.

I cannot run Security Check, ComboFix, and many other apps on my machine. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Please download and run the tool below named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run.

There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
Vista and Win7 users need to right click Rkill and choose Run as Administrator

You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.
  • Rkill.com
  • Rkill.scr
  • Rkill.pif
  • Rkill.exe
  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.
  • Do not reboot until instructed.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

Once you've gotten one of them to run then try to immediately run the following>>>>.

Please download exeHelper by Raktor and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click on exeHelper.com or exeHelper.scr to run the fix tool.
  • A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
  • A log file called exehelperlog.txt will be created and should open at the end of the scan)
  • A copy of that log will also be saved in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com
  • Copy and paste the contents of exehelperlog.txt in your next reply.

Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the tool again before posting a log and then post the two logs together (they both will be in the one file).
=======================================
Before you do this step for Combofix:
[4]. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts to run.
Rename (right click> rename) the combofix.exe file to brentsfix.exe
Then double click on brentsfix.exe and follow the prompts to run.
===================================

This log file is located at C:\rkill.log.
Please post this only if requested to by the person helping you.
Otherwise you can close this log when you wish.

In an earlier instruction, you provided a script to use with ComboFix. After the initial ComboFix run, I used the script for a 2nd ComboFix run.

No, I have not written the script for Combofix. I wrote code for OTM to remove the entries that were found in the Eset scan. You have had to do extra scans just to get the preliminary scans to work. Although I asked you to run Combofix earlier, at that time you could not. Please don't run anything else until I can go over the Combofix report- it will be tomorrow morning.

Brent, the logs look pretty good. In setting up some script, I noticed you have many processes starting on boot and running in the background. They are all legitimate, but they are using resources you system could use elsewhere:

Consider taking the following off of Startup and/or uninstalling processes you may no longer be using:
(It appears that you may be a realtor and have some work-related programs running.) They are legitimate programs however, so it's your choice:
MagicDisc,
CanonSolutionMenu, Printer, Scanner
Belarc
Winter Fun Wallpaper Changer
KODAK EASYSHARE 5000 Series All-in-One Printer:(Status Monitor)

(There are 2 printers on startup)

Check the status of the following: They may be work related but were installed 9 years ago and there have been changes in those years: I got 3 different descriptions for the processes
RMClient: originally Winternal;acquired by Microsoft in 2006. Some of the originals features may have been incorporated into the OS.
1. RMClient.dll is part of Symantec PCAnyWhere
2. JobHisInit"="c:\program files\RMClient\JobHisInit.exe" [2001-04-07 135168]>> Used by Ricoh network printers to enable network printing from the client
3.MplSetUp="c:\program files\RMClient\MplSetUp.exe" [2000-11-05 40960]>> Used by Ricoh network printers to enable network printing from the client

Dell QuickSet is a program that comes pre-installed on new Dell Windows Vista laptops. This program contains a Wi-Fi Catcher function that is used to scan and quickly identify available wireless networks. The Wi-Fi Catcher's scanning activity, however, can cause USC network to slow down and become unusable. your laptop may be blocked if it runs the scanning feature in the Dell QuickSet program.

To avoid being blocked, see directions and screen shots to disable the Wi-Fi Catcher Network Locator HERE

Have you intentionally given these ports status to open Globally? This means that any account on the system has access.
"1723:TCP"= 1723:TCP:mad:xpsp2res.dll,-22015
"1701:UDP"= 1701:UDP:mad:xpsp2res.dll,-22016
"500:UDP"= 500:UDP:mad:xpsp2res.dll,-22017

Please take any action you want regarding these processes. When you have finished, run HijackThis to see if any of their entries are still loading.

One more small thing. You have the Backweb updater insistently reloading. Logitech and Kodak both use this updater. I disacourage auto-updaters for these as it means they access the internet persisitently and frequently looking for updates which are not vital.

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
    Code:
    :filefind
     IadHide*.*
  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

This will identify all the entries so I can remove them. Then I will suggest that you open both EasyShare and the Logitech Messenger and remove the check for auto-update.

Not to worry! We're almost through and you will be able to remove the cleaning tools and logs! Let me know if you need help using the msconfig utility to take processes off of the startup menu.

HijackThis/System Look Logs

Bobbye,

I totally uninstalled Winter Fun and Kodak Easyshare (can do without them).

The RMClient items are used on our network printer. Not sure I want to tweak those.

The HijackThis and SystemLook logs are below.

FYI, I'm still getting messages like the attached screengrabs at startup and when I try and run Firefox. This has also screwed up my computer's audio.

Read before checking Fix All
Option 1: SetPoint.exe
Logitech keyboard and mouse drivers that allows you to configure and enable special features of your mouse and keyboard. This startup is only required if you use these features. If you do not, this entry can be checked and you can remove the program from the Startup menu.

Close all Windows except HijackThis and click on "Fix All"

Boot into Safe Mode
  • Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard.
  • Select the Safe Mode option when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, and then press ENTER.
Using Windows Explorer: Windows Key + E> click on My Computer> Double click on Local Drive (C)> Double click Programs> click on + sign on Set Point to expand> on right screen, find each of these and do a right click> delete

LULNCHR.INI
LULNCHR.EXE

Close Windows Explorer
These files relate to auto-update for new Logitech Software and are not needed to run the program.

Click on Start> Run> type in services.msc> enter> find each of the following and double click> Set startup type to Disabled> Stop the Service:
JavaQuickStarterService(jqs)
HP Port Resolver
HP Status Server

Exit Services
Reboot

Let me know if you notice a difference.

It helped some...

Startup was a good deal faster and smoother, but normal operations are still sluggish. I tried to start Firefox and got the same error message I posted previously. Once I click ok on the error message, Firefox slowly opens but is extremely sluggish. The sound continues to be affected as well, and it worked fine before the attack.

Not sure what else to do.

Thanks

I though both of the error messges would be resolved. Access your Start menu using the msconfig utility and uncheck any processes for Logitech and Java.

Okay- looks good. Just 2 persistent entries. Run the script below- you don't need to leave the log:

Custom CFScript

  • [1]. Close any open browsers.
[2]. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
[3]. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the code below into it:
Code:
KillAll::
Registry::
[HKLM\~\startupfolder\C:^Documents and Settings^Brent^Start Menu^Programs^Startup^Winter Fun Wallpaper Changer.lnk]
[HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"LDM"=-
Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe
CFScriptB-4.gif

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it will produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt . Please paste into to your next reply.
====================
Boot into Safe Mode
  • Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard.
  • Select the Safe Mode option when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, and then press ENTER.
To remove entries from Startup using the msconfig utility:
  • Click on Start> Run> type in msconfig> enter>
  • Click on Selective Startup
  • Choose the Startup tab:
This is where you UNCHECK the Startup items. This does not remove the item or uninstall anything> it just stops it from starting on boot. It can be rechecked at any time if wanted.
  • To expand the Command Column, (this shows what the process 'belongs' to) hold left mouse button down on the dividing line on frame above Location and move to the right to expand.
  • Uncheck any process related to the Logitech Desktop Manager (LDM)> if you do not do this, entries like the 018 processes will continue to add up and slow you down> Uncheck any processes related to the Winter Fun Wallpaper Changer
[*] Click on Apply> OK when finished.

NOTE:
When you reboot the system the first time after making changes using the msconfig utility, a nag message comes up that can be ignored and closed after checking 'don't show this message again.'
Once you make changes to the Startup menu, you must remain in Selective Startup to retain those changed. If you go back to Normal Startup, everything you unchecked will be checked again and start on boot.

Check Add/Remove Programs for either of the above entries> if showing, uninstall both.
Use Windows Explorer to remove the program folders: Windows + E> My Computer> Double click on Local Drive (Usually C)> Programs> Navigate to the program folder for SetPoint and double click to open> do a right click> Delete on the LDM on the right screen> then do a right click> Delete on the Wallpaper Changer folder> Apply> OK> Exit Windows Explorer.

Removing all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created
  • Uninstall ComboFix and all Backups of the files it deleted
  • Click START> then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • Download OTCleanIt by OldTimer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click OTCleanIt.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.
  • You should now set a new Restore Point and remove the old restore points to prevent infection from any previous Restore Points.
  • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools
  • Click "System Restore".
  • Choose "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next".
  • Give the Restore Point a name> click "Create".
  • Go back and follow the path to > System Tools.
    [*]Choose Disc Cleanup
[*]Click "OK" to select the partition or drive you want.
    [*]Click the "More Options" Tab.
[*]Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous Restore Points except the newly created one.

Empty the Recycle Bin

I don't think the Sound problem is related. Please open the Volume Controls in the Notification Area and check the settings. Also look in the Device Manager for any error on the sound card driver.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Bobbye,

Thanks for your help. As more and more problems crept up, I opted for a clean install. I did it over the weekend and everything is running normally now.

Thanks, and this can close now.
