Russia tests cutting itself off from the rest of the internet, most VPNs fail to bypass restrictions

In brief: Russia's long-running plans to cut itself off from the global internet and create its own sovereign version appear to have taken another big step toward reality. The country's communications authority, Roskomnadzor, reportedly tested the system by blocking foreign websites and applications in some regions recently. Unlike in China, where residents can use virtual private networks to circumvent Beijing's Great Firewall, most VPNs failed to allow Russian citizens to bypass the restrictions.

According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a US nonprofit, Roskomnadzor conducted the test over the weekend, impacting residents in Dagestan, Chechnya, and Ingushetia – Russian regions mostly populated by ethnic minorities.

Users in these areas experienced issues accessing WhatsApp and Telegram, as well as YouTube, Google, and even some services of Russian internet giant Yandex.

Russian digital rights NGO Roskomsvoboda told TechRadar that while most VPNs didn't work during the weekend's test, there were some that did. It never specified how many or which ones.

Russia has been cracking down on the use of VPNs recently. There are at least 197 of these services blocked in the country, and many have been removed from the Russian Apple App Store. There was also a law passed in March criminalizing the act of spreading information on how to bypass internet restrictions, which includes VPNs.

Russia has been working on its sovereign internet plans for a long time now, going back to before it invaded Ukraine (but after Crimea). In 2019, the country performed a series of tests to see if federal and commercial telecom operators could effectively separate Russia from the Internet while still allowing access to local services using a DNS cache.

Following the invasion of its neighbor in 2022 and the subsequent sanctions and restrictions imposed by Western companies, Russia fully disconnecting its homegrown RuNet from the rest of the internet seemed increasingly likely, even though the Russian Ministry for Digital Technology, Communication and Mass Media said at the time that there were no plans for such an action.

The Kremlin has recently invested roughly $648 million into developing its technical capabilities to restrict internet traffic, writes ISW. It has also been trying to push Russians into moving from Western social media platforms to domestic platforms that the government can more easily control.

On December 7, Roskomnadzor warned that it could block eight foreign web hosting providers, including Amazon Web Services (AWS), GoDaddy, and HostGator, from operating in the country due to noncompliance with Russian censorship laws.

To our Russian friends, from the Free World:

We hope you do not get cut off from us. We hope for a day when you can join us without significant government interference or restrictions.

If it comes to pass that you are cut off from the World, please remember that there are two sides to every story. You will be fed only part of the story. Yes, we should probably try to remember that as well.

Imagine living in a country where your government spends $648 million not on infrastructure, education, or healthcare but on ensuring you can only use their version of Facebook and read propaganda headlines all day. Peak dystopia vibes.
Or a country where presidents spends 1 billion on his / her presidental campaign, while people have to live in tents on the street.

Of couse they're trying to cut themselves from the Internet when they realized that their propaganda doesn't work that well when some of those poor idi0ts know when they speak with their a$s or not.

Aside from the fact that most attacks from Russia are state sponsored and this won't limit those. This is really just for citizens and will suck for free speech and freedom of information
They'll even have a faster connection, since everyone else has been cut off. Good premises for more Russian cyber attacks.. :-D

At least we will know for sure whos sendin these attacks. No more random hackers. Its gonna be Mistah Putler. No more excuses!

It's going to hurt the EvE player base. I love fighting those crazy Ruskies. I think it's something absurd that over 20% of the player base is Russian speaking.
Dota 2, Diablo 3... many WoW servers are like 90% full of Russians. Its gonna be all gone soon! I can't wait :D :D
Who knows, I might finally see Europeans while I play in Europe. For once.

This is sad for the Russian people. I've known and worked with many Russians over the years. They were some of the smartest folks I've worked with in the past 40 years. My heart bleeds for their country and people. Vlad can't live forever, let's pray he doesn't get his communist empire built before then.

His Empire is pretty much build.. its almost there. He ain't that old either. People can live to 90-100 and still think and walk. Look at William Shatner and many others. If he lives for another 30 years, RIP Russians and the whole world.

Unfortunately most of his closest "friends" are just as fanatical as he is, if not more so. The chance of the person who survives the bloodbath thats on its way being a moderate is very small, unless the army or the security forces have a candidate they would prefer.

Definitely. The Eve player base is more important than the freedom of Russian citizens. /s

I remember how we used to get Voice of America and Radio Free Europe back in Communist Romania. The authorities tried their darnedest to jam or disrupt those stations to no avail. Information will still flow in and the Kremlin will be powerless to stop it. Sure, they will make owning a radio illegal but that never stopped anyone during Nazi Germany or Stalinist USSR.
USSR 2.0 will eventually fail, like the original USSR did. How many will die before that happens is anyone’s guess.

China has spent about 200 times that amount on the same goal, and maintains an army of several hundred thousand Internet censors, something to which Russia has so far not done. China also heavily restricts VPN use -- as does Egypt, India, Jordan US ally Oman, and NATO member Turkey.

As far as the poor old Russian populace is concerened,I feel sad for them. As for their government...good fu@#%$g riddance..!
