Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Review

You know what I don't like about games like this?

The type of gamer it attracts. The gaming snobs who think they're so unbelievably cool at completing these types of games.
The 'You're not really a proper gamer unless you play & master masochistic, life sapping endurance slogs like this game' attitude.

Say that you don't like 'From Software' games and the derisive, sneering look they give you says all you need to know about them.

That's awesome. And I've run into those types before. They're insufferable.

I won't play this game, but have a good buddy co-worker who does. Every morning I have to listen to his tales of woe about how he "almost killed" such-and-such in the game after umpteen hours of trying.

No thanks.

100% worth a play through even if you aren't a From software fan. It's hard, but its much more welcoming than Dark Souls as it gets rid of a lot of the RPG mechanics that casual players have troubles grasping.

Now I'm just dying for Ghost of Tsushima to come out later this year.

You can't even talk about any other game being hard without some Dark Souls snob coming to tell you how that game is easy and if you really want to play a hard game you should play Dark Souls but even that is not hard because he did it without dying and we're all *****s. They're always one upping each other too. You also can't use certain items that are even intented to be used because that makes the game "too easy" and you should now go back and play it again without it. You must play the game by their rules they made up in their head to feel superior. Seriously, there's not a worse fanbase in gaming than these losers.

I mean they aren't wrong. Not all games are made for casual players... I would argue that the FPS crowd is worse than Dark souls players, but I'm a DS player so I'm biased.

Saying that you don't like 'From Software' games is a pretty broad statement to make considering they've released/worked on over 60 games (according to Wikipedia). I know a lot of people (mistakenly) choose to associate them exclusively with the Souls series, and I'll assume you meant it that way, but it seems reasonable that people would be confused by your statement unless you qualify it further with specific examples and reasons.

Not that there's anything wrong with liking or not liking games. I didn't like DS1 or DS2, I did like DS3, and I really like Sekiro. All for specific reasons, mainly to do with how the controls feel and how fluid the combat is/feels.

TLDR don't paint with too wide a brush, or you're as bad the one's who paint every non-souls player as a casual/bad gamer.

I love From Software's games not because I'm a gaming snob, but because they are beautifully designed with intricate levels and subtle nuanced stories. I also love the difficulty because it makes the game tense and gives a real sense of achievement when you kill a tough boss or finally make it to that tricky next bonfire.

So many games like the Assasins Creeds or Bioshocks have no real penalty for death and for me these can become slightly mindless because of this.

What do you mean they aren't wrong? It's not about being wrong or right it's just them being autistic x2 over a game. Can't think of any other fanbases that are as insufferable as Souls fans.

Great review!

"If you max out your opponent’s Posture bar, you’re able to perform a deathblow and either kill them or remove a full bar of their health. Generally, this system rewards aggressive gameplay and strategically applying pressure." - this game mechanic really fails you when fighting multiple elite mobs like those "pinwheel" dudes standing back to back, or maybe it's just me. XD

"there’s a particularly striking boss encounter in the late mid-game that has stuck with me" - I completely agree, that's if you were referring to an encounter involving monkeys, which would mean I must be late mid-game.

Interesting, but I wouldn't pay the full asking price. Wait for at least 75% or 80% off by the end of this year.

Besides, I have other games to play and complete.
