Similar to many others on this forum, my laptop's been infected with Sirefef.y. The laptop's HP with a Windows 7 operating system.

A few hours ago, I noticed that my Firewall and Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) weren't working. I uninstalled MSE and reinstalled it. After running a scan, the scan detected "Trojan:Win64/Sirefef.y" and when I tried to remove it, I got a message saying that due to some error, Windows would be shutting down in 1 minute. Tried running some Panda Security software but because my system shuts down after 1 minute after every start up, I couldn't do anything.

I tried to get into safe mode but regardless of being in safe mode, my laptop still shut itself down after 1 minute. While trying to figure out the problem, I tried to get into safe mode again but I found that I'm also not able to get into safe mode, despite having pressed F8 numerous times.

I know this problem is very repetitive on this forum but I hope that I will be able to find a right solution that would fit my laptop and its settings. Thank you very much and your help is much appreciated!!

Yes, this malware has hit very hard! Give the following a try, then see if the system will stay up long enough to run the scans:

Start> Run> type cmd> enter> at the C prompt type ipconfig /flushdns (note space before the /)
-----------------------------
Please follow these steps: Preliminary Virus and Malware Removal.

NOTE: If you already have any of the scanning programs on the computer, please remove them and download the versions in these links.

When you have finished, leave the logs for review in your next reply .
NOTE: Logs must be pasted in the replies. Attached logs will not be reviewed.
======================================
Note: If you can't download the scans directly to the infected computer, download them from a clean computer to a flash drive. Then connect to the infected system to run the programs.
=====================================
My Guidelines: please read and follow:
  • Be patient. Malware cleaning takes time. I am also working with other members while I am helping you.
  • Read my instructions carefully. If you don't understand or have a problem, ask me. Follow the order of the tasks I give you. Order is crucial in cleaning process.
  • If you have questions, or if a program doesn't work, stop and tell me about it. Don't try to get around it yourself.
  • File sharing programs should be uninstalled or disabled during the cleaning process..
  • Observe these:
    [o] Don't follow directions given to someone else
    [o] Don't use any other cleaning programs or scans while I'm helping you.
    [o] Don't use a Registry cleaner or make any changes in the Registry.
    [o] Don't download and install new programs- except those I give you.
Threads are closed after 5 days if there is no reply.

Thank you so much for your response!
Just a side note, before I received your reply, I went into System Restore and once it was completed, I was able to work with the computer for more than 1 minute (no more MSE warning signs either). I am still unable to use MSE or my firewall, though. The GMER log came out blank. Here are my other logs from the 5 step process:

I also had another concern: I have two other computers in my home that share the same internet password and router. I was wonder if there was somewhat the hacker (for Sirefef.Y) could gain access to these computers through the internet connection and cause damage. My internet connection for my infected computer was acting very strangely before the problems occurred which is why I'm worried. Thanks again and here is my attach log:

==== End Of File ===========================

You might want to stay off the home network until we get the system cleaned up. Most of what I see is associated with adware and we will be removing those plugins, toolbars and browser helper objects. Don't share any files at this time.

Please note: If you have previously run Combofix and it's still on the system, please uninstall it. Then download the current version and do the scan: Uninstall directions, if needed
  • Click START> then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
--------------------------------------

  • Download Combofix from HERE or HEREand save to the desktop
    • Double click combofix.exe
      cf-icon.jpg
      & follow the prompts.
    • If prompted for Recovery Console, please allow.
    • Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
      The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
    • Note: If Combofix was downloaded to a flash drive, the Recovery Console will not install- just bypass and go on.[/b]
    • Note: No query will be made if the Recovery Console is already on the system.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Before you run the Combofix scan, please disable any security software you have running.
    (If you need help with this, please see HERE)
  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware
  • If Combofix asks you to update the program, allow
  • When the scan completes , a report will be generated-it will open a text window. Please paste the C:\ComboFix.txt in next reply..
Re-enable your Antivirus software.
Note 1:Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
Note 2:If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion", restart the computer.
Note 3:CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficultyand terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
=======================================================

  3. Open Eset Smart Installer
    [o] Click on the esetsmartinstaller_enu.exelink and save to the desktop.
    [o] Double click on the desktop icon to run.
    [o] After successful installation of the ESET Smart Installer, the ESET Online Scanner will be launched in a new Window
  4. Continue with the directions.
  5. Check 'Yes I accept terms of use.'
  6. Click Start button
  7. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
    esetonlinescannersettings_thumb.jpg
  8. Uncheck 'Remove found threats'
  9. Check 'Scan archives/
  10. Leave remaining settings as is.
  11. Press the Start button.
  12. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please wait for the scan to finish.
  13. When the scan completes, press List of found threats
  14. Push Export of text file and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Paste this log in your next reply.
  15. Push the Back button, then Finish
NOTE: If no malware is found then no log will be produced. Let me know if this is the case.
=======================================================

Combofix will remove some of the malware. I will write script to remove additional entries after you run Combofix. I will also set up removal for anything found in the Eset scan. Please leave those 2 logs in your next reply.

I tried running ComboFix and this is what happened:
- Left my computer disconnected from the internet
- Ran ComboFix after pasting it onto my infected computer's desktop, wasn't given a prompt that said "The Recovery Console was successfully installed"
- It continued to run anyways and it completed stage 50
- After a few minutes, it rebooted my system
- After the reboot, I got the ComboFix window that said "Preparing Log Report. Do not run any programs until ComboFix has finished. pevFind, by Billy O'Neal III, version 1.5.6 ComboFix Edition. Syntax Error. Pass LEGAL for license information. Built Sat Jun 25 23:20:28 2011"

I'm planning to leave it on overnight because I've been waiting for about 45 minutes to an hour for the log to pop up and for ComboFix to finish and am wondering if it's stuck.

I apologize about the post before! Here is the ComboFix log:

ESET Scan log:

Why did you add Avast? You already had MSE running:
AV: avast! Antivirus *Enabled/Updated* {2B2D1395-420B-D5C9-657E-930FE358FC3C}
AV: Microsoft Security Essentials *Disabled/Updated* {9765EA51-0D3C-7DFB-6091-10E4E1F341F6}
SP: avast! Antivirus *Enabled/Updated* {904CF271-6431-DA47-5FCE-A87D98DFB681}

Remove one of the AV programs please. Reboot the computer when finished.
================================================
Please read my instructions carefully. I think you may have found this:
Note: If Combofix was downloaded to a flash drive, the Recovery Console will not install- just bypass and go on.

But you missed this:
Before you run the Combofix scan, please disable any security software you have running.
So you had 2 antivirus programs running when you did the Combofix scan.
==================================================
Please handle the antivirus problem now.
================================================
Please run this Custom CFScript:

  • [1]. Close any open browsers.
    [2]. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    [3]. Open notepad> click on Format> Uncheck 'Word Wrap> and copy/paste the text in the code below into it:

Let me know the status of the internet and if the system is rebooting on it's own when you finish.

I apologize for any trouble I might have caused you! I thought I disabled everything, especially since the orange AVAST logo had an "x" on top of it. After running ComboFix again as you instructed (using the script you gave me), I successfully uninstalled the three programs and I have no trouble getting onto an internet network. The computer also doesn't reboot on its own while the Firewall seems to be back on. For the log I'm pasting here, I made sure to disable my AV. I also uninstalled MSE before running ComboFix again.

The system is looking better. Unfortunately, it is the scan that you do which can be affected by the security running.

Regrding ParetoLogic> Strongly recommend removing:

ParetoLogic is a spyware/adware scanning and removal program that can be utilized to stop unwanted programs from accessing your computer. Unfortunately, many users have experienced system slowdowns and poor performance with the software. While many programs offer a simple uninstall, extra processes should be implemented when removing ParetoLogic from Windows XP and Vista systems.
(It should also be noted that none of the ParetoLogic web sites or pages are rated safe by Site Advisors.

Part 1.
  1. Click on Start> navigate to your "Programs" icon via Windows Vista and the "Add/Remove Icon" when using Windows XP.
  2. Find the ParetoLogic application> Click to Highligjt> choose the "Remove" option
  3. Restart your computer, and the first part of the removal process is complete.
Part 2.
  1. Click on Start> navigate to the "Accessories" tab> System Tools> Scheduled Tasks.
  2. Click on this option to bring up the "Tasks" menu.
  3. Find "Paretologic Registration"
  4. Left-click on the application, and then in the window on the left side click the "Delete" link to remove the scheduled task.

You're welcome. But I think I've found the source of the malware.

Download CKScanner and save to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick CKScanner.exe and click Search For Files.
  • When the cursor hourglass disappears, click Save List To File.
  • A message box will verify that the file is saved.
  • Double-click the CKFiles.txt icon on your desktop and copy/paste the contents in your next reply.

Thank you so much for your consistent replies! The log is pasted below. And I apologize if I sound like I'm repeating myself but because my infected laptop was connected to our home network internet while the virus was activated/became active, I'm concerned that the other computers may also be damaged/affected. Is there a possibility?

You or someone who you authorized to use your computer is downloading thru the torrents or from Cracked sites. Piracy is illegal and brings malware with the downloaded files. I do not support piracy and to continue support, all pirated downloads must be removed.

I saw the entries in Mbam and I confirmed it with the CK Scanner. If you've used the pirated program on the other computer, you probably have the malware on them also

Thank you so much for letting me know. I deleted these files; I had no idea as I do share my laptop frequently with others.

I do share my laptop frequently with others.

This is something you should reconsider. As you have seen, others don't necessarily respect your property and you may want to consider being less generous..You also need to tighten up the security on the system:

You may find the following helpful: (Links are Bold Blue)
Tips for added security and safer browsing:
  1. Browser Security
    [o]Make Internet Explorer safer
    [o] Use WOT Site Advisor..
    Have layered Security:
  2. Add a Firewall (only one)
    [o] Zone Alarm Free
    [o]Comodo Firewall Free
  3. Antispyware/Security: I recommend all of the following:
    [o]Spywareblaster:Protects against bad ActiveX.
    [o]IE/Spyad Restricts bad domains.
    [o]MVPS Hosts files Directs HOSTS file to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
  4. Stay current on updates:
    [o] Windows Updates. You should get All updates marked Critical and the current SP updates.
    [o] Adobe Reade. Uninstall old.
    [o] Java Uninstall old.
  5. Reset Cookies to prevent Tracking Cookies:
    [o]For Internet Explorer: Internet Options (through Tools or Control Panel) Privacy tab> Advanced button> check 'override automatic Cookie handling'> check 'accept first party Cookies'> check 'Block third party Cookies'> check 'allow per session Cookies'> Apply> OK.
    [o]For Firefox: Tools> Options> Privacy> Cookies> check ‘accept Cookies from Sites’> Uncheck 'accept third party Cookies'> Set Keep until 'they expire'. This will allow you to keep Cookies for registered sites and prevent or remove others. (Note: for Firefox v3.5, after Privacy click on 'use custom settings for History.')
    I suggest using an AdBlock compatible with the version of the browser you have.
    [o]For Chrome: Tools> Options> Under The Hood> Privacy Section> CHECK 'Restrict how third party Cookies can be used'> Close.
    (First-party and third-party cookies can be set by the website you're visiting and websites that have items embedded in the website you're visiting. But when you next visit the website, only first-party cookie information is sent to the website. Third-party cookie information isn't sent back to the websites that originally set the third-party cookies.)
  6. Do regular Maintenance
    [o]To include Disc Cleanup, Defrag, Error Check/
  7. Remove Temporary Internet Files regularly:
    [o]TFC
  8. System Restore Guide: Understand Restore Points> why you need to clean and set restore points and what information is in them.
  9. Practice Safe Email Handling
    [o] Don't open email from anyone you don't know.
    [o] Don't open Attachments in the email. Save to your desktop and scan for viruses using a right click
    [o] Don't leave your personal email address on the internet/ Have a separate email account on free web-based mail.
Please let me know if you find any bad links.

About toolbars(TB) and browser helper objects(BHO) and other 'bundled' objects:
Many download scrren have pre-checked boxes for TB and BHO. Frequently they have nothing to do with the programs you're downloading. ALL should be unchecked BEFORE you download the program.

After you download, when you are ready to install(run) the program, if you are offered Custom install or Standard install, choose [b[Custom.[/b] That will give you some control over leaving out some of the 'bundle.'

How is the system doing now? Are you still connecting okay? Are you having any sudden or random reboots?

Thank you so much for all of your help, advice, and the links you provided for me! I will begin tightening the security on my laptop right now. I will also definitely re-consider letting other people use my computer frequently as I wasn't aware of many of the files being downloaded and searches that were being done on the computer. The system is doing really well: I am able to connect well, the firewall is back up, and there aren't any sudden or random reboots. Do you think it's okay for me to connect permanently onto my home network now?

You're very welcome! You got off easy this time with the Sirefef malware! As you have probably noticed, many with this malware found themselves in a endless reboot cycle that had to be dealt with before any scans could be done.

If you used flash drive between the computers while this system was infected, It would be best to start a new thread for each computer and go through the scanning process. If any of the same processes I had you uninstall on this system are also on the other systems, they should be remove from there also- I am referring to the processes like DealPly, CrossRider, Freecorder Toolbar, etc.

Remove all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created
  • Uninstall ComboFix and all Backups of the files it deleted
    [o] Click START> then RUN
    [o] Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • Download OTCleanIt by OldTimer and save it to your Desktop.
    [o] Double click OTCleanIt.exe.
    [o] Click the CleanUp! button.
    [o] If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
    [o]The tool will delete itself once it finishes.
    Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.
    Note: If any tool, file or folder (belonging to the program we have used) hasn't been deleted, please delete it manually.
  • Set a new, clean Restore Point
    [o] Click on Start> right click on Computer> Properties
    [o] Select System Protection
    [o] Click on the Create button (near bottom)
    [o] Type a name for the Restore Point
    [o] Click on Create again to save the restore point.
  • Deleting all but the most recent System Protection point in Windows 7
    [o] Click Start> Computer> right click the C Drive and choose Properties> enter.
    [o] Click Disk Cleanup from there.
    image2.png

    [o] Click Clean up system files
    This restarts Disk Cleanup to run in elevated mode.
    [o] Click the More Options tab
    w7-srp2.png

    [o] Click the Clean up under System Restore and Shadow Copies.
