Further cementing their alliance, Skype today announced an update for its beta client on the Mac that brings the same Facebook integration already available on Windows PCs. Mac users can now link their Facebook accounts with Skype, which enables them to send instant messages with Facebook friends, read and update their Facebook news feed and “like” their friends posts.

To set it up, users simply need to fire up Skype, click on the "Connect to Facebook" tab, and enter their Facebook sign-in details. Unfortunately, the update also brings display advertising within the main Skype window for nonsubscribers and people who don't have any Skype credit; something the Windows version has had for a while.

This deeper Facebook integration has been available for Windows users since the end of July via Skype for Windows 5.5. One feature that's still notably absent at this point is video chats across platforms, however. Facebook introduced Skype-powered video chat two months ago but the feature currently works only with users logged in to the site.

As usual, you can find the latest Skype Beta for Mac OS X (or Windows) in our downloads section.
