Hi,
A friends laptop had started running slow and not accessing the internet, and she was unsure why so I decided to take a look.
I am now able to connect to the internet, but it is still running slow (and there are not many programs installed). I have gone through all the steps on the 8-step Viruses/Spyware/Malware Prelim removal instructions site, and I have now attached the logs.
Only in Step 5 (Super AntiSpyware) were there infections detected.

Is there still something there in the background causing the machine to be slow? (ie, slow startup)

I appreciate your help.

thank you.

There are some Norton's leftovers, so download and run Norton Removal Tool: http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

When done...

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  2. Close any open browsers.
  3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
NOTE1. If Combofix asks you to install Recovery Console, please allow it.
NOTE 2. If Combofix asks you to update the program, always do so.
    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
  4. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  5. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  6. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Make sure, you re-enable your security programs, when you're done with Combofix.

DO NOT make any other changes to your computer (like installing programs, using other cleaning tools, etc.), until it's officially declared clean!!!

Not malware connected, but happened to notice the system is behind on updates:
Platform: Windows Vista (WinNT 6.00.1904)

Vista SP2 is out.

Hi,
Thank you for the further instructions.
I have attached the ComboFix log.. however it won't let me attach another HijackThis log file?

Also, is there anything else I can do to update the system updates? I have installed all Windows updates?

Thanks again,
maria.

Hi Broni,
I have been having issues with part 2 of your recent instructions. I go to the Kapersky website as an administrator, but it always seems to hang. It doesnt go through the whole scan. I have managed to see 2hrs into it, but lately it only reaches 10mins or so.

I'm not sure what to do?

Maria

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner

  • Disable your antivirus program
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Scan archives
  • Click Start
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push List of found threats
  • Push Export to text file , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.

Post fresh HJT log as well.

Hi,

I ran the ESET Online Scnner, but it didnt have the option to press 'List of found threats' ... but it did say 'no threats found' at the end of the scan.

I have also attached a new HJT log.

Thank you,
maria

Disable Windows Defender, as it'll interfere with cleaning process:
- Open Windows Defender by clicking the Start, clicking All Programs, and then clicking Windows Defender.
- Click Tools
then...

++ Windows XP:
- Click General Settings
- Scroll down to Real Time Protection Options
- Uncheck Turn on Real Time Protection
- After you uncheck this, click on the Save button
- Close Windows Defender

++ Windows Vista:
- Click Options
- Under Administrator options, clear the Use Windows Defender check box, and then click Save.

Enable Windows Defender, when all cleaning is done.

Very good :)

Please download OTC to your desktop. It'll remove most tools and logs we used so far. If any tool, file or folder (belonging to the program we have used) hasn't been deleted, please delete it manually.

  • Double-click OTC.exe to run it. (Vista and 7 users, please right click on OTC and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Click on the CleanUp! button and follow the prompts.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process, choose Yes. If it doesn't ask you to reboot, restart computer manually.
  • After the reboot all the tools we used should be gone.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes.
