Recap: While we love our PCs, the PlayStation has long boasted the kind of exclusives that rivals eye with envy. But that started to change recently as PS4 games including Death Stranding and Horizon Zero Dawn arrive on computers.

In Sony's 2020 corporate report published over the weekend, it reveals that the company intends to continue its strategy of releasing games on the PC. "We will explore expanding our first-party titles to the PC platform, in order to promote further growth in our profitability," reads the report.

Sony has previously said that it won't turn into Microsoft and release games on PC and the PlayStation simultaneously, nor will every exclusive end up on both platforms. What the report does suggest, however, is that older games such as God of War, Days Gone, and Spider-Man will join the PC party. We could even see the excellent Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us Part II losing their 'PlayStation exclusive' status.

As for titles slated to appear on the PS5 such as Horizon Forbidden West or Spider-Man: Miles Morales, they could take a lot longer to hit the PC. But with the Steam release of Horizon Zero Dawn boosting sales of the three-year-old game, despite its bugs, it's easy to see why Sony wants to continue down this path.

Elsewhere in the report, it's revealed that the PS4 has now reached 112.1 million unit sales across its lifetime as of June 30—an increase of around 2 million since the end of March. There are currently 113 million active monthly PSN users, 45 million PS Plus paid subscribers, and PS Now has reached 2.2. million subscribers. And while the pandemic has boosted the gaming industry, Sony notes that its overall business lost ¥68.2 billion ($876.3 million) in operating income due to Covid-19.

Good. Gamers over walled gardens.

And they will still make more than enough profits to justify it.

So, what a reason to have PS5 now?
Xbox Series X only because it has backward compatibility.

Because consoles are cheap and convenient. Building a good gaming PC costs as much as three times a gaming console. This including all peripherals needed to run a good gaming PC.

Timed exclusives. If blockbuster titles like RDR2 remain to be delayed release for PC, consoles has a place. Cost is still a big issue when you are likely need a graphics card that cost more than the console itself to get better performance. The PC Master Race might have the greatest hardware possible, but over 35% of gamers on Steam uses a 2060 or weaker GPU, and there is still 20% using 1060 and 1050 Ti alone. A PS4 costs less than the 2060 today, on what is supposed to be mainstream GPU (most don't want to go lower because of compatibility with newer games) and not accounting for cost of the rest of the PC, plus any overpriced gamer peripherals you would be suckered into getting. What tech focused gamers don't realize is that most gamers just want something easy to plug and go, and that there is no overwhelming need of gaming in 4K with amazing framerates. There are a lot of people who don't really even understand the significance of AMD, nVdia and Intel, or what is amazing about a 2080 Ti vs a 1660.

What is the myth about PS5 don't have backward compatibility? Sure, Xbox has BC beyond last gen, whereas Sony has only confirmed that majority of titles of PS4 would be compatible. But is lack of 360/PS3 BC really a deal breaker for anyone?

I have no argument here, but I want to note that people play on PC to enable better performance and graphics, which RTX 2060 easily does compared to current generation consoles. Those who have a budget GPU often play esports games that are light to run, who are yet their own audience. The striking majority of all gamers want the plug and play experience of consoles without tinkering, so framerates and all that nifty stuff don't concern them. We are talking here about different target groups and it's important to remember most console purchasers wouldn't actually label themselves as "gamers".

The real reason to get a console is not timed exclusives, it's still the ease of use, but timed exclusives could be a thing for a serious gamer who owns both a PC and a console, or one who is willing to buy only one device and wants to play the greatest and latest games at release. Exclusives in the end don't hold that much power and Sony is seemingly willing to admit this and moving on. If they would hold, how Xbox One could have sold as much as it has with it's "lesser" exclusives (matter of taste). They took the interesting route of trying to make Xbox all-in-one media device that unfortunately wasn't perfectly executed. The direction was still right, to offer actually something in the device that you want to pay for and not just for a priviledge to play some titles. Nintendo handles this side very well and that's why Switch sells, even though we could argue it's library is not as amusing.

About the PS exclusives on PC: This is great news, even though I personally think most of the titles are for the casual audience, still there are few titles I would like to try out. PC market is growing, so this move is more than sensible.

But I bet those games they release from PS4 era will get new remasters for PS5 and PC version will just be same quality as original release. Still want to see LOU, Days Gone, GoW arrive on PC.

I was surprised when I saw Persona 4 Golden on Steam. Sony needs to release more of their library on PC!
