Spying by using Van Eck Phreaking

The description of Van Eck Phreaking is in the wiki. The issue is real enough alright - - I've been in computer rooms with Faraday Shielded windows to contain the EMR.

The story from BleepingComputer.com is a good read - - impressive that they could guess the correct AES key byte-by-byte ie: (256 options per byte, for 32 bytes — so a total of 8192 guesses). In contrast, a direct brute-force attack on AES-256 would require 2256 guesses and would not complete before the end of the universe.

Encryption is a hobby of mine, so this was an interesting read. The problem I see is, can an attacker get close enough to a location to conduct an attack without getting caught? To even get inside a data center that contains private information that's encrypted, it will probably take more than just signing your name on a sign in sheet to get into a data center. I would also assume that the data center would have security such as cameras, and employee ID cards.

The only way I can see this attack being slightly successful is if your a current employee at the data center, and you were really careful. Even then, you still have to worry about surveillance cameras at the building. Anyways, good find, jobeard
