I just built a new computer and have a old xp disk with sp1. I do all the updates. Then when it's time for Sp2, it installs then I restart and after the opening xp screen it goes to the blue screen with a stop code.

Stop: 0x0000007e (0x0000005, 0x00000000, 0xbacc30bc, oxbacc2db8)

I have no idea what this means. I can restore back to before sp2 and everything is okay. The only clue I have is some software is reading my 4GB of Ram as 3.4. Maybe a bad stick? I'm working on figuring out Memtest, and will try it. All my drivers/bios are updated. Someone please help me out.

Oh my system.

Abit IP-35 pro mobo

0x7E: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

A system thread generated an exception which the error handler did not catch. There are numerous individual causes for this problem, including hardware incompatibility, a faulty device driver or system service, or some software issues.

Check Event Viewer (EventVwr.msc) for additional information and pay close attention to yellow and red markings because that will point you to where your issues lie.

As for your RAM, XP will not recognize 4 gigs of RAM because it is a 32-bit system. It takes a 64-bit OS.

* By the way, nice rig! Those Abit IP-35 boards are excellent.

In the event viewer, I'm receiving the following:

System-red(error):
Service Control Manager-several
DCOM-several
NTServicePack-a couple of the many ran
SidebySide-the only 3 times ran
NetBT-a couple
Dhcp-a couple

yellow(warning)
W32time-a couple

Application:
LoadPerf
MsiInstaller
Application Hang
MSDTC
a couple other warnings

I need the rest of the information from the Event Viewer for the Errors:
Follow this path:
Control Panel> Administrative Tools> Event Viewer> Click on System & Apps, one at a time on the left> look for Errors on the right> right click error> Properties> note description of error, Event# and Source.

There is a "copy" button below the up/down arrows. Click that, then go to any place that allows you to type (ie. notepad, wordpad, this board) and you can paste (use CTRL-V) the entire event details there. It makes for easy reporting of the event.

If you want to paste the Event here, you do not need to include the lines of code that follow the Description- but paste all else. You will be looking for Error that occurs at the time of the problem. Please ignore Warnings.

Each Event has an ID number, a Source and a Description. I need all three of those which will be in the copy. IF you have recurring Errors which has all 3 items exactly the same, I only need one copy..Skip the Time Warning for now. Let's let the Errors resolved, then I'll help you set that.

For instance, the Errors will copy in this format with their information:

List of my conflicts/sharing in system info. I have a clean install of XP right now and haven't tried the sp2 update yet. So I have errors in the event viewer, but not after trying the Sp2 update. I'll list the errors I am having for now regardless. And try the sp2 update and note exactly what time to get you that list. Then I can post the errors pertaining to the exact problem. It just takes me a while to get back to stable after I do it.

These errors were around the time I loaded Avira antivir personal. It did the blue screen error thing, but was able to restart after. The av app needed to be repaired , but is working now. Let me know if this helps at all, or if i should try to update to sp2 and get you the errors from that.

A cascade of Events:
First, Windows detects and references the newly introduced network adaptor. The adaptor is redetected as part of the upgrade process. Event ID 4311 appears in the system log when you reinstall a network adapter in Windows XP. SP2 Usually the connectivity isn't lost:

The reason I say to ignore Warnings is that if the problem doesn't resolve, it will result in an Error:
Note: From Microsoft: ""By default, the client tries to renew its lease for an Internet Protocol (IP) address when 50 percent of its lease time has expired. The attempt to renew the lease has failed. Make sure that the computer is physically connected to the network and that the network adapter is correctly configured.

But IP wasn't established, resulting in the Error. You may lose connectivity now:
Event Type: Error, Event Source: Dhcp, Event ID: 1002, @9:07:34 AM on 5/5/2008
Description:

Earlier in the morning of the same day, a performance counter wasn't able to connect. This is probably unrelated to the other events, but if you have a network set up, it is sometimes noticed with File and Print Sharing. If it remains or becomes an issue and you do not have a network you can go to the Control Panel> Network Connections> LAN> Properties and install the service File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks> left the check box for this service blank. This will enable the Server Service.

Apparently you didnn't reboot at the time.

Windows Update Agent installs updates from Windows Update, Microsoft Update, or Windows Server Update Services.

Windows Update Agent detects updates every day at the user configured time or by default at 3:00 A.M. If the computer is configured for Automatic Updates to take place, the downloading and installation of updates also take place at this time.

Edit to add: Please ignore Information and Warning Events.

I've tried:

The Microsoft hotfix for this error. Removing all usb devices. several clean install with every configuration of driver known to man. taking out memory and starting with each one in slot 1. every variety of chkdsk.

My mobo doesn't have onboard graphics, and I have latest drivers. Can my gpu still be a suspect? Burnintest has no errors detected. Someone help.

In the list of Events you posted, the Warning event 63 with Source WinMgmt can usually occur when a Service Pack is applied, these messages are completely normal. This happens when the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) Provider is doing it's business.

Considering the clean install, all updates, all current drivers, the issue has got to be hardware related. The two drives mentioned are the "PhysicalDrive1" which refers to the second drive in your system and "PhysicalDrive0" is generally your C: drive

RSM is the Removable Storage Manager. Are you trying to load the USB flash drive files onto your hard drive? It appears that you may have hard drive failure. The fact that you did a reinstall but still have this problem points to needing a new hard drive.
