Something to look forward to: The success of 2023's Super Mario Bros movie practically guaranteed a sequel. Nintendo shared basic details about the upcoming film during a stream celebrating the franchise's 40th anniversary, though much remains unclear. The company also announced remasters and upgrades for select Mario games on the Nintendo Switch 2.

Illumination's second Super Mario movie, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, hits theaters on April 3, 2026. Nintendo announced the film with a brief trailer during an anniversary stream for the video game franchise. The video (above) revealed little beyond a sleeping Mario, a few environments from the first film, and the sequel's title.

Nintendo released Super Mario Galaxy (the game) in 2007 for the Wii. It sent players through space-themed worlds and featured unique gravity-based platforming. The title was very well-received and scored high among critics and players.

Nintendo confirmed that the first film's entire main cast will return for the sequel, including Chris Pratt as Mario and Jack Black as Bowser. However, the company didn't reveal whether The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will feature Princess Rosalina, who debuted in the original game.

Players will get a chance to revisit Super Mario Galaxy and its 2010 sequel, Super Mario Galaxy 2, when Nintendo re-releases them for the Nintendo Switch on October 2. The remastered package will not change the graphics or gameplay of the 15- and 17-year-old games, aside from a resolution boost, a new easy difficulty mode, and brief extra story content. Both titles run at 1080p on the Nintendo Switch and 4K on the Switch 2, which might also enable 120fps at a lower resolution.

However, the games will be more expensive than many customers might have expected. They will be available individually on the Nintendo eShop for $39.99 each or together for $69.99. It seems steep for ports with very little new to offer.

Additionally, Nintendo announced an expansion and Switch 2 upgrade for Super Mario Bros Wonder, a 2D Mario platformer released for the Switch in 2023. The DLC, titled Meetup in Bellabel Park, is set for release next Spring. Meanwhile, a new entry in the Mario Tennis series, Mario Tennis Fever, launches on February 2.

Other Switch and Switch 2 games showcased in Friday's Nintendo Direct (above) include Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (December 4), Resident Evil Requiem (launching February 27 alongside Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village), Hades II (November 20), an expansion for Donkey Kong Bananza (available now), Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave, a remake of Dragon Quest VII, and several others.

I was just talking with my brother how western culture has stopped progressing. We aren't coming up with new ideas, artists aren't creating new genres of music, nearly all movies are either sequels or remakes and people into traditional arts aren't creating paintings or drawings that are talked about. It seems like art is just something else to me monetized and not celebrated.

So much of this has to do with AI devaluing their works but this reminds me of a specific StarTrek eipsode where people insisted on eating traditionally grown food instead of replicated food. That food from the replicators was somehow bad. What exactly that has to do with the thought I'm trying to convey, but I find it interesting that I'm looking back to something I saw 30+ years ago and while I can't think of a single TikTok reel or work of modern art to associate with this. I just don't see anything coming out in the last ~10 years providing a novel or new experience despite being flooded with content for hours a day.

There are plenty of original movies, art work + music. You just need to look beyond all the much easier to obtain garbage you are referring to.

The idea that it is so easy to obtain is part of the problem

The problem is, and almost always has been, money.

Movies and TV shows are more expensive than ever to produce - and very few established studios are willing to risk the tens (sometimes hundreds) of millions necessary to make a movie unless they are guaranteed a profit.

It's hard to sell a studio on a "new idea" which MIGHT succeed over a sequel/remake of something that was already successful.

You can still find "original" movies... but they're the low-budget ones from small studios who are willing to take a chance - or feel they MUST take a chance as they get muscled out of business by established players.

This goes for music, books and just about any other art form as well - just the most obvious in movies :)

Asimov (a student of history) wrote in The Foundation series that this is due to the decline of civilisation. As a civlisation falls they no longer see the future and focus on what is and was, rather than looking forward and innovating.

If it was about money they wouldn't make the nonsensical propaganda that Commiewood spits out. M-She-U, Rings of Power, Fail Wars are ideology, not cinema.

As Fink said: "We have to force behaviour (people will accept our commie rule)." The ultimate goal is the Kalergi plan and nothing will stop them from achieving it, unless we do something about it.

You probably don't want to watch yet because of your leanings but plenty of good movies come out recently, One of my favorites was Jesus revolution great movie.

I actually take great interest in the mythology of all religions. I'm currently on a mezo-american kick with the Aztec, Incas and Maya's. I'll check it out, though. He's an interesting guy and I feel I can say that safely without stirring the pot.

lol - those may be “ideology” but no one green lights them unless they think they’ll make money.

You think Amazon hasn’t made a fortune from Rings of Power? If they hadn’t, there never would have been a season 2 - or greenlit a season 3!

And Disney paid BILLIONS for Star Wars… they fully intend to get their money’s worth! There will be Star Wars TV shows and movies until they aren’t profitable.

Well the weather going with the license that may be sooner than they think. Somehow Disney managed to alienate men from Star wars and superheroes.

The first Mario movie was pretty meh IMHO, that said, it scores a very decent 7/10 on IMDB so people must have liked it and it's a decent rating for a video game movie, too:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6718170/

Decent means not memorable and not a masterpiece for an otherwise iconic video game character.

Depends on the demographic… I suspect it was geared towards children - who tend to come with at least 1 adult.

I know my nephew and niece LOVED it and demanded it be seen over and over… I found it decent - but it wasn’t geared for me…

Meh, we have a ton of good new things, it's just drowned in a lot of crappy things.
