Synology to require branded hard drives for future NAS models

At the end of the day all a NAS is, is a basic file share on the network
With windows, maybe. But NAS is so much than that. All my mobile pictures synchronize with it, face recognition, gateway as a docker module, home assists work oob, video surveillance, file sharing, web server as a docker, and many, many, many more. And sure you could do most of that on windows (with a dozens of separate mobile apps), but Synology is just works. No crazy work required. No incompatibility. No dozens of mobile apps. No hours spent on ports management, bridging dockers and so on. I dislike and I do not own Synology nas but the software is very, very good, best in market.

At the end of the day fiat multipla and mercedes s class are just cars, both will take you from city A to city B. but....

for mobile sync my nas runs onedrive so does my phone, for my camera's I have the save location set to the nas as a network save location, my plex is also running on it making it even more useful.

And was that set up that way out of the box? How much of additional effort does it take? How well will that work for a non tech person? How easily your aunt can browse pictures of your kids?
Again, I'm not saying you can't make it work. I'm saying the Synology software is best on the market and takes away a lot of effort required to achieve similar results on non synology nas software. You are paying for convenience, because it actually often is worth it.

OneDrive is part of Windows, that was easy, as for my aunt they are all dead, now my mother in law, pretty easily with plex it can show photos, I also just have a shared OneDrive folder I put pictures in that are me and my wife's occasions ect that she might like, and she can click that link in her email and see them pretty easily because cloud. As for a non-tech person pretty easily.

I'm quite sure Synology drives are made by Toshiba - exclusively.
Toshiba's good, but no one cares about that. We care about freedom of choice and Synology has now taken that away. Byebye choice? Byebye Synology. Been nice knowing you.
