Windows 10 users have just weeks left before Nvidia ends Game Ready driver updates

A hot potato: An unwelcome moment is approaching for die-hard Windows 10 gamers. Nvidia's previously announced move to stop issuing new GeForce Game Ready drivers for the OS takes effect after October, limiting its support to quarterly security releases and critical bug fixes.

The cutoff comes one year after Microsoft officially retired Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Nvidia granted the aging operating system an extra 12 months of full Game Ready and Studio Driver coverage, allowing owners of supported GeForce cards to continue receiving optimizations for new games.

Team Green says the final Windows 10-compatible Game Ready driver will arrive in October 2026, while the first release to exclude the OS is scheduled for November.

Existing drivers and games won't suddenly stop working once November arrives, but Windows 10 users will no longer receive the regular performance tuning, compatibility profiles, feature additions, and fixes accompanying major releases.

Over time, new titles may run less reliably or miss improvements available to otherwise identical Windows 11 systems.

Nvidia isn't abandoning Windows 10 entirely, at least not yet. Following the final full driver release, it plans to publish quarterly security updates through October 2029. Those should address critical vulnerabilities and serious bugs.

Just as Nvidia prepares to move away from Windows 10, Microsoft has extended its consumer Extended Security Updates program for another year. Enrolled Windows 10 PCs can now receive critical and important operating-system patches until October 12, 2027, although normal feature updates and technical support ended last year.

Maxwell, Pascal, and Volta GPUs already left the Game Ready program in October 2025 and receive critical security updates only through October 2028.

Valve's July 2026 Steam Hardware Survey shows Windows 10 on 24.8% of participating Windows PCs, compared with 75% for Windows 11. The survey isn't a complete picture of the PC market, but Statcounter shows a similar 69%/30% split.

Despite companies' best efforts to convince them to change, there are still plenty of Windows 10 users who won't move to the latest version of the OS. Hardware restrictions at a time when PCs are more expensive than ever are one factor, but surveillance, ads, account requirements, and an excess of AI features also put people off.

And yet here I am with drivers from nearly a year ago and having zero issues playing any games I have on Windows 10.

You can go months, sometimes years without needing to update your video drivers and you'll play games without issues.

It's not a grand conspiracy just the way business buddies work.

Windows 10 LTSC 2021 IoT is still getting full updates and will continue getting updates until 2032. This is by far the best version of 10. It has much less telemetry and runs faster/lighter/cleaner. I imagine many of the existing W10 installs are on that version.

As far as graphics drivers, W10 and W11 are very similar. The driver updates from Nvidia are the same one for both O/S's. Plus Nvidia probably has AI doing most of the work for them.

It is unfortunate that Nvidia is making this business decision.

There are versions that DO NOT go out of support:

Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 (21H2): Supported until January 13, 2032.
Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019 (1809): Reaches end of extended support on January 9, 2029.

I'm calling their bluff on this one. My hottest games are roughly 20 years old, so if they're not optimized yet, they're not gonna be. I'm not changing a thing about my setup until 2032.

It has several times the marketshare of Linux, which is over 30 years old and Nvidia still supports it.

You can go months, sometimes years without needing to update your video drivers and you'll play games without issues.

There will come a time when there will be game titles you can't play. If NVidia isn't supporting Win 10 there really is no incentive for developers to ensure they don't use Win 11 APIs that would make a game incompatible with Win 10.

It's out of support. Last year windows 7 still had a 5.2% market share, was it some grand conspiracy that windows 7 didn't have 5090 drivers?

There are versions that DO NOT go out of support:

Those versions are NOT for consumer use, therefore do not need Game Ready drivers.

I'm didn't create the system. If you think otherwise that's fine. I have heard and seen and watched more than a few corporations be fined for collusion. Imagine all those that haven't been caught which is most. I'm on safer ground than you think

Perfect. Just like no longer getting win10 buggy and unstable fixes, less risk of the same for game and graphic drivers. I did finally retire my win8.1 media centers and they were more stable and reliable than supported win10. I'm looking forward to maybe a decade of stable, reliable, win10 unsupported systems.

Well, so far you have suggested these companies are colluding as an argument against them dropping an out of support OS. Are you going to actually defend your point or just cry about how people dare to pay attention to what you say?

I am still on Windows 10 and I game with a GTX 1080.

Will this affect me or others using GTX 10 series GPUs? No, it won't. Not interested in playing any new games, they are mostly slop anyway.

In the unlikely case that I upgrade my GPU, 2026 drivers for my new NVIDIA GPU will work just fine. I only play old games anyway. Gaming just doesn't interest me as much as it used to.

The one thing I will never do though is get on the Windows 11 bandwagon. My 4790K is still happily trucking along.

Yes. The operating system is out of support. That means support is going to....END! Shocking I know. Companies dropping support for systems that are at end of life isn't controversial nor is it unexpected.

No different then when people pearl clutched over windows 7 support ending. Just because some refuse to let go of past operating systems doesn't mean there is collusion in support being dropped. Windows 10 is EOL. It's time to let go, or continue to live in the past with older drivers while the rest of the world moves on.
