Taser-equipped drone demonstrated on unfortunate intern at SXSW

The military has been using unmanned drones to carry out operations for years but as the technology becomes more accessible, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that interest is picking up domestically.

A Texas-based company called Chaotic Moon Studios recently showed off Project C.U.P.I.D. – Chaotic Unmanned Personal Intercept Drone – during SXSW and fortunately for us, several cameras were on hand for the demonstration.

The six-rotor aircraft packs a laser targeting system and an 80,000 volt stun gun that’s designed to hunt down and stop criminals in their tracks. The unfortunate intern in the clip above reportedly volunteered to be zapped although he was compensated for his time (and discomfort).

Found is a TechSpot feature where we share clever, funny or otherwise interesting stuff from around the web.

But is it laserproof??

How often do the cops actually chase someone where they'd need this? Usually they show up after the crime and track them down. I really doubt suspects run in real life as often as they do on CSI. What they need is a drone that can stop a car. Car chases are far more likely and dangerous.

Perhaps a good workout plan and some new cross-trainers would help them catch criminals on foot without the technology. :)

Oh great... As if the fascists in our police departments needed another way to abuse their authority, and kill you. It's bad enough that they dress like they're in the military, tase children, shoot kids with Wii remotes, and kill people protecting their families while serving no knock warrants on the wrong houses.

How shocking. It works fine in a controlled environment with non of natures elements rampant and against a willing static guinea pig but how well will it actually work in a real life chase drama situation? I don't think the common trigger happy flatfoot has to worry about being replaced just yet.

Who gives a f***? As long as the company that makes it can make money selling it to police forces far and wide, that's all that really matters, isn't it?

It's the same with defective body armor and guns that jamb, they're profitable.

And you know how many cost overruns are going to be involved, as soon as they get a contract(s) to build them.

Or, we could have the Chinese build them for us. That way they can leave a back door in order to sic them on their, "masters".

Dobermans have a reputation for attacking their owners. I think it's only fair that if you're going to put them out of a job, it's only fair to leave the same hazard in place for the robot's handlers.

The future is coming, and looking pretty much dystopian like we figured, FWIW 80,000 V is getting on the high side..LOL

This was way too close to achieve a the Neuro-Muscular Incapacitation, the probes were too close to each other. It must have hurt though...

Next time we will see homing missile-equipped drone demonstrated on unfortunate intern.. :D

Aww man, I was hoping it would chase him around the room with tracking software and taze him while he desperately tries to escape.

could be the basis for a new 'reality' TV show. Experts control the device, volunteers for prizes flee the drone on foot through the city and if they get away they get a prize, if not.....zap.

No no, I want a swarm of these that can track targets autonomously.

Better to be tazed and dazed than shot dead by a fearless psychopath, who's in fear for their life, I mean arent they always in fear? thats the problem they hire pussies and fear based lower IQ parrots who run around in fear all day lol, I wil take the drone any day over a chicken **** cop with a bad attitude. yep

Tased and dased, assuming the person that was tased didn't have a heart defect/condition. On a table in the coroner's office, and a paid off medical examiner writing that your death had nothing to do with the 80,000 volts that was just sent through your body multiple times, otherwise.
