In brief: You'd be forgiven for thinking TCL is behind LG when it comes to premium TV shipments, but the Chinese giant has overtaken its Korean rival in this market segment. Samsung still leads the pack, but TCL's share has grown an impressive 8% year-on-year.

TCL, known for its affordable yet high-quality 4K, QLED, and Mini-LED TVs, shipped more than twice as many premium TVs YoY in Q4 2024. It captured 20% of global premium TV shipments, according to data from Counterpoint Research (via Flatpanels). That puts it ahead of LG, which held a 19% share.

The two companies' shipment figures have gone in opposite directions since Q4 2023, when LG held a 26% share and TCL was on 12%.

Samsung remains the leader when it comes to premium TVs. Its share dropped from 41% to 29% year-on-year, but it's still comfortably ahead of second-place TCL.

Chinese brands are showing impressive growth in this market. Hisense also saw its shipment share rise, from 10% in 2023 to 16% in Q4 2024.

With so many marketing terms now flooding the TV market, what falls into the category of a premium TV isn't always clear – some mid-range TVs are being marketed as QLED or mini-LED sets.

Counterpoint writes that it classifies QD-MiniLED, QD-LCD, NanoCell, LCD 8K, QD-OLED, WOLED, and MicroLED TVs as premium TV models. The segment grew 51% YoY to reach a record high in the fourth quarter, with full year shipments up 38%.

In terms of global shipments (I.e., not just the premium sector), TCL overtook LG in 2022, with Hisense doing the same a year later. Samsung also leads this area, though its share is only 2 percentage points higher than TCL's.

Counterpoint notes that Mini-LED LCD TV sales are growing rapidly, having increased by more than 170% YoY.

While premium TV shipments have increased, the overall TV market grew by just 2% in the final quarter of 2024. Calvin Lee, a researcher at Counterpoint Research, warns that the 25% tariff on imports from Mexico implemented by the Trump administration today will have an impact on Mexican-produced TVs. Samsung, LG, Hisense, TCL, Sony, Panasonic, and Vizio all have production facilities – or their contract manufacturers do – in the country.

Get those TVs now as Best Buy's CEO has already said technology products will go up in price everywhere thanks to the tariffs.

America first means America first . Tariffs are working just like they did during Trumps first term.

President Donald Trump held a press briefing Monday where he announced a $100 billion investment ( TMSC just doubled it , now 200 billion) from Taiwanese Chip company TMSC in the United States. President Trump on the TMSC investment: “We’ll be at close to 40% of the [chips] market with this transaction and a couple of others that we’re doing.” The investment will be to produce semiconductor chips in Arizona.

Facing the potential for tariffs on Mexican assembled autos, Honda has cancelled plans to invest in a new auto factory in Guanajuato, Mexico, beginning in November 2027. Instead, the car company will retool the Civic auto production facility in Greensburg, Indiana, keeping jobs in the USA.

Tariffs are working??

Obviously you haven't seen the StockMarket erasing every gain from the past 3 months, you haven't seen Canada removing American products off their shelves, you haven seen China imposing counter tariffs on American Agriculture products and Mexico is getting ready on how to hurt America even harder by Sunday.

Even the most successful philanthropist Warren Buffett said "Trump's nonsensical trade war will hurt the U.S more than its partners "

It's time for you to realize that Trump was your biggest voting mistake since you are alive.

lot of copium there , how are those eggs?

Free trade soon to your closet ally soon Russia now you are the 47 Oblast -see Trump has changed the USA flag to an all white one. French now can make jokes about yellow belly americans

Trade is not like Trump things a win , lose . If done properly it's a win/win you want USA Billionaires to get richer off your backs, at expense of instability in Mexico and rest of world - tell me how that is a winning formula

America has gone to the dark side, the dislike in the rest of the world is growing for USA - you want to sack all your forward bases in Turkey, Europe for Putin.

Trump is overseeing the biggest decline in USA power in modern history . The EU will rise, their defense industry won't need yours , keep your crappy Boeing planes etc
The US dollar with lose it charms as trade will Euro will pick up
China, asia pacific, Europe alliance will rise with free trade

So much winning
Trump had to save farmers from last tariffs , he's already killed more programs for them , see cost of fertilizer to rise , canada show stop water , - Hows your steel aluminium

Good news Trump said you can cut down your national forests - like you care

least with all other inflation eggs will be cheap

USA is dishonest , breaks agreements and no friend of the West - makes you proud so be it

I don't think you realise the hatred building worldwide against USA - good thing many don't have passports or can read and write to any proficient level

TCL sneaking past LG in the premium TV market feels like a plot twist no one saw coming. At this rate, by 2026, we’ll all be arguing if Hisense makes a better OLED than Sony while Samsung watches from a distance, clutching its shrinking market share.

Good news, LG is about as far from premium as one can get. Technology does not equal quality. I'd rather anybody else use LG panels than buy an LG product.
