Following the massive success of Doom 2016, it seemed inevitable that id Software would follow up with a reboot of its other famous first-person shooter franchise, Quake. Its existence was confirmed at E3 when the studio revealed a CGI trailer for Quake Champions, and now the first gameplay trailer has been released as part of QuakeCon’s opening ceremony.

The upcoming “competitive multiplayer arena shooter” looks very much like a modern imagining of 1999’s Quake III: Arena. The 75-second video shows that development on the game is moving along at a fast pace, and, as you would expect, there's an emphasis on high-speed action.

As the trailer’s Sauron-like voice announces “I see you,” we get to see some of Quake Champions’ weapons, including shotguns, assault rifles, rail guns, lasers, and rocket launchers – and yes, rocket jumps are possible.

The verticle space appears to play a big role in the game; a lot of the footage shows player flying through the air using launch pads or the aforementioned rocket jumps.

“We’re focusing on pure Quake gameplay,” said id Software boss Tim Willits. Speaking about the absence of weapon loadouts in the game, he added: “You time the pick-up right, or you kill an opponent and take it. That’s how you get a gun in a Quake game!”

Quake Champions will feature a number of character classes, each one offering different skills and some with varying speeds. “The classes only add value to gameplay,” Willits said.

The game will initially launch only on the PC and run at “120Hz with unlocked framerates.” Much like the recent Doom, id Software is aiming for Quake Champions to work smoothly across a wide range of hardware. "You'll be able to turn down your specs and get a decent game at lower-end. But we want to shine on good systems."

There will be a public gameplay demo this Saturday at QuakeCon, and a closed Beta is expected sometime early next year. Keep up to date with developments at quake.com.

I miss the good ole days of Quake 2 when the weapons and environments looked realistic sci-fi instead of fantasy.

Quake 3 lost my interest. Quake 4 was awesome.

This looks like more Quake 3 - a tech demonstrator to test my Core i7 6950x, 32GB Ram and Titan X.

Looks a bit Unreal Tournamentish.... Looks like maps, weapons, and models are a continuation from Quake III Arena. It looks fun, don't get me wrong. But I want a new Quake 1, with the Gothic theme and single player. Honestly I'd be happy if they completely remade Quake 1, same maps, monsters, and weapons but just with new graphics yet keeping the same look. It probably wouldn't sell well though as only the few of us who played that back in the day would be the only ones buying it for the nostalgia.

Speaking of Quake did anyone play the DOPA episode 5 that Machine Games made? It was pretty good, not perfect, but good.

That trailer just looked...meh to me. But maybe because this just seems a lot like Quake III Arena. I wish we could see something more along the lines of Quake 1 or Quake II Quad Arena (which I got from GOG for dirt cheap). Single player missions or co-op would be nice. Not into this arena multi-player combat.

I still actively play quake live, I am looking forward to this as a good boost to the genre and get some more interest in the game as quakelive seems to no have a very VERY small user base.

Trailer looks great but its looks so like unreal tournament 3. in a way it would be hard not to look like it considering you have to beef up the graphics a lot. all the weapons and effects are almost exactly like unreal 3. I would still play it though

Apart from the rail gun, lg, nail gun, sg, mg and gauntlet yeah the weapons are exactly like UT3...

Yes graphics wise it does look more UT3 with its kinda "chunky" style. But as already mentioned it supposed to be a modern alien fighter so you should expect elaborate alien environments similar to UT. As long as it has speed comparable to Q3A/QL, Clan Arena and Duels then I am happy.
