The White House reportedly discouraged Intel from making more silicon wafers in China

The big picture: Intel has been trying to build a more resilient supply chain for its chip manufacturing efforts, but the company won’t be able to do so in China. The trade war between China and the US is forcing the chipmaker to take the hard route when it comes to producing more silicon wafers, which means the ongoing chip shortage will persist until at least 2023.

Intel is currently working to expand its manufacturing capacity as part of its IDM 2.0 initiative. The company plans to become a strong competitor to chipmakers like TSMC and Samsung, and even wants to become the leader of process and packaging technology by 2025. Both are very ambitious goals that will require a lot of engineering talent and financial investments, but global politics could create some serious roadblocks along the way.

According to a Bloomberg report, Intel has been trying to speed up chip manufacturing in China as a way to address the ongoing chip shortage. However, the White House is said to have “strongly discouraged” these plans, as they interfere with President Biden’s security policy and domestic production efforts.

The company wanted to manufacture silicon wafers at a facility in Chengdu, China, that could have become operational by the end of 2022. When the Biden Administration expressed worries about potential security issues, Intel agreed to put those plans on hold and focus on finding alternative solutions.

Intel depends on government subsidies and tax incentives to build its US manufacturing plants, so it has to appease regulators when it comes to choices like this. As an alternative, the company is evaluating the possibility of building similar facilities in the US and Europe.

This might prolong the chip shortage and hurt Intel’s production goals in the short term, but the company seems willing to make those compromises and align with the Biden Administration’s goal of manufacturing essential components in the US.

Does Intel propose expanding a current production facility in Chengdu, China , or building a new one there? That important detail is missing. If it's new, how can they get it up and running in just one year, but will take two to three years to commercialize their new Arizona facility?

Wait, does Biden want to have shift production facilities of US firms from China to US as well?
And why isn't the mass media criticizing him the way they did Donald Trump?
From the article, it sounds like Biden wants to manufacture essential components in the US - which would eliminate dependency on China. IMO, this is a wise move.

As to the Mass Media, certain mass media outlets are experts at manufacturing BS - especially if it turns those that they are politically opposed to into bogeymen.

Who do you think helped fund the "election" of Puppet Biden?

Of course they're not going to smear their guy.

The media has, and always will be, one sided in America.

Mostly the way each went about it. Trump imposed tariffs and expected companies to eat those costs until they managed to produce those taxed products domestically - instead the companies just passed the tariffs off to the customers (as has always happened with every tariff in history). We don't know what the Biden administration did to encourage Intel, but if I had to bet, it likely involved something to do with defense spending and plans to require even things like CPUs and GPUs to be made in America.

Probably because T**** was such a monumental a**hole in so many other ways. For instance, "covid is a Democrat hoax". The fallout from that statement is over 759,000 dead, with likely financial repercussions of bankruptcy in hospitals across the US, from intensive care bills that will never be paid. Those monetary shortfalls will extend to Medicare, and they have already tacked on almost $25,00 to next years premiums.

And don't forget, T**** started the trade war with China in the first place. Not to mention forcing a fiixed withdrawal date for US troops from Afghanistan, which Biden is also being blamed for.

And BTW, TSMC and Samsung are also building fabs in the US. Hopefully, that will increase availability of GPU s, hopefully leading to a cessation, (or at lease an abatement), of whining and whimpering about the prices of video cards.

The Democrats did cry when Trump imposed a flight ban from China. So it is not like they were more proactive than him, on the contrary.

To get back at the issue, Trump didn't start a "trade war", the trade war was on for way too long and the US was losing badly, a look at the trade deficit is sufficient to prove that.

Probably the same reason Biden keeps up with this policy, despite its former denunciation, the numbers (trade deficit) are still true.

No, Trump did start it when he imposed tariffs on Chinese goods.

The funny part of that is, Americans will/would be the ones [paying it.

The trade deficit has existed for decades. It's nothing new.

At the end of the day, Americans don't want to pay for American made goods, they want high wages, and cheap products. So, that means the American public created the trade deficit.

About the only thing Americans are willing to pay too much for, are video cards. And god knows, they'll trip over one another begging scalpers to sell them to them..

Sounds like someone's been on a steady diet of Fox News... you know, the champions of truth-telling, oh wait.
Trump has been banned from Twitter permanently. The only reason I mention this is because we're liable to experience an influx of Trump supporters / refugees from that platform.

Look up Obama depleting N95 mask for SWINE but never replenish them and had a so called good excuse to use those funds for other stuff then we got COVID. All politicians are bad, Trump was the lesser of the other evils. Please don't start with dummy Biden even CNN hates him now and bashes him lol!
