The world's largest iceberg is rapidly breaking apart and melting away

Shelf Life: Icebergs are large masses of frozen freshwater that measure at least 15 meters in length. The largest ones typically break off from the Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica before slowly melting as they drift into warmer ocean waters. A23a, currently the largest known iceberg, is nearing the end of its unusually long journey.

Nearly 40 years after breaking away from the Filchner – Ronne Ice Shelf in Antarctica, the A23a iceberg is finally beginning to melt and merge into the ocean for good. A23a ranks among the oldest and largest icebergs ever recorded and remains the biggest block of frozen freshwater on the planet.

Nicknamed the "megaberg," A23a weighed roughly one trillion tons earlier this year. Although it has since lost more than half its original mass, the iceberg still measures about 1,770 square kilometers in area and spans 60 kilometers at its widest point. Researchers have tracked its decline using satellite imagery from the European Copernicus observatory.

Recent data shows that A23a has begun to fragment into "smaller" pieces, some as large as 400 square kilometers. These chunks are further breaking apart into even smaller icebergs, many of which still pose navigational hazards for ships at sea.

According to Andrew Meijers, a physical oceanographer with the British Antarctic Survey, the changes underway in A23a can be described as nothing short of "dramatic." The megaberg is essentially nearing the end of its life, "rotting" from beneath as it drifts into waters that are simply too warm to sustain it. Constant melting is now unavoidable.

The process will continue in the weeks ahead, Meijers said, until A23a is no longer clearly identifiable. The iceberg originally calved from Antarctica's massive ice shelf in 1986, before "grounding" in the Weddell Sea, where it remained stuck on the seafloor for more than 30 years.

It finally broke free in 2020, carried by Antarctic currents into the South Atlantic Ocean. In March 2025, A23a briefly posed a threat to penguin and seal colonies after becoming stranded in shallow waters off South Georgia Island, though it moved on a couple of months later.

Together with parts of the Arctic ice pack, Antarctica's icebergs contain some of the planet's largest reserves of frozen freshwater. But they are melting slowly and inexorably, with profound consequences for human activity and natural habitats worldwide.

I'm 44 years old. Lived in NY all my life - minus some life abroad. Years ago I bought a snowblower. I maybe used it 2 Winters in a row. Haven't had to use it for at least the last 5 years. When we do get snow it's minimal and thin.

for my time abroad in Asia, most people I've met there claim it's hotter than they've ever seen in their long lives.

While thermodynamics would say the Earth is slowly freezing inside-out, common sense would show definitely indicate the atmosphere is warming and between human population's rise and the increase use of fossil fuels, as well as the increasing intensity and severity of storms. you'd have to be completely insincere to think that climate change isn't real.

But let's say you don't believe in Global Warming... The governments do.

I went to Maldives and Seychelles on vacation and they literally are claiming their islands are being drowned. A tour guide in Soneva Fushi pointed that out to me. One in Mahe did as well.

Ice bergs are melting. What more do you want?

The Earth has been WARMING since the last ice age.
Heck, I remember in the 70's, they said we were headed to a NEW ice age...that didn't happen.
And then in the 90's the global warming nonsense started.
The retreating ice in the "Nordic" area uncovered an abandoned settlement that had been covered
in ice for centuries. Researchers dated it to the 12th-13th century. They were amazed at the discovery,
all the artifacts etc.
Not once did anyone say "hey! How was it WARMER up here, to sustain a village?"

Goddamn 12th century villagers provoked global warming with their farts!

And don't even drag me into bragging about those frikkin romans! - warmed up the planet with their concrete fabs, and for what?! - beat the cold so they could take over Gallia and Germany in flip-flops?

I think a much better set of words to describe those people is "Completely Ignorant."

Climate change IS real… that’s not really debatable… the argument is about WHY it’s changing.

Earth’s climate has ALWAYS been changing - we’ve had ice ages, hot spells, natural disasters, etc…

Whether humanity is causing this, or if it’s something that was going to happen anyways… that’s the question…

There's no doubt climate change is real, but I'm sick and tired of the hypocrisy from the people that constantly preach it, yet continue to it way more than you or I. Like the big tech companies who are expanding power hungry data centers funded by the same hypocrite investors so they can profit. Or the celebrities/sport teams that travel by jet multiple times a year to play in huge venues/stadiums upon which the same hypocrite fans travel to. Profit and enjoyment comes before any solution to the current climate issues.

Never in history changed were so drastic in such a short time, unless a meteor or megavolcano was involved.

And there is no question about who is causing it. It's humanity. No need for any denial, we have all the research done. There is no arguments either, unless you listen to far right excuses.

Sure, and I have oceanfront property to sell you in Oklahoma.

You're arrogant enough to claim "we have all the research done" and yet no wild prediction based on any of that research has ever come true 😂

But this time global cooling global warming climate change needs to be stopped by giving gov't more money and power, right?

between human population's rise (We.ve only managed to increase CO2 by 0.001% but guess what it's been much higher than the 0.04% its currently at and the only thing that happened was plants grew more) and the increase use of fossil fuels By America, China and India, as well as the increasing intensity and severity of storms (NO THEY'RE NOT the science and records proves this is not the case) .

What a load of twaddle I don't know where you are getting your information from but it's not a good place

I've seen an article the other day claiming your dogs/pets are causing climate change. 🤪

For me the root cause analysis is still the cronies before the small time people causing significant pollution that can potentially disrupt the ozone layer that blocks the uv rays. Iceberg Melts, climate gets warmer, that water condenses into the atmosphere creating more clouds rinse repeat. The same cronies pushing for the croud control via climate change legislation are the biggest polluters!

Nobody said climate change isn't real, if it wasn't we'd be in a permanent ice age. What is a lie is man made climate change as the climate has always changed, or are you climate alarmists going to say that the past few billion years haven't happened and that only man has had an effect on the climate?

Nothing more than anti-humanist propaganda.

They should start naming the icebergs after the yachts of billionaires, that'd be fun. Maybe we're reading this because one of us is meant to swim out there and save it.

Well, we can just say this was the "Elon Musk" of icebergs already. And it went down exactly the same way...

Anyway, you people disappoint me. As computer technology enthusiasts, you should be the cream of the crop of humanity. The most intelligent type. Global warming isn't a "partisan" issue. It's just the planet frying humanity's future very, very slowly.

And yet, I still read this kind of "controversy" about a fact no moderately intelligent person in their sane mind would ever deny anymore. You disappoint me, really.

Oh, and please bear in mind that I will likely not engage in this "controversy" any further, because I'm part of the staff and I have to behave.

Unfortunately, real intelligence in computers can exist with partisan views that let one ignore what science says. I think it comes down to a distrust of science, possibly rooted in religion; a belief that humanity is special, or rather certain groups are special; and that this planet is ours for the taking. It goes hand in hand with other actions, such as what we do to animals---and I say that as a hypocritical meat-eater---so if a few bricks are analysed, the edifice of illusions will start to collapse; therefore, it must not be analysed. Actually, if you compare articles, you'll see similar sentiments that strong AI will never match us or be sentient. Same thinking but different object.

To ask questions is science or is it not? The meta analysis yields a stale mate at best!

Yes, the spirit of science is scepticism and to ask questions, and science itself can degenerate into dogma, as we see in string theory. Ultimately, its answer would be: "Look at all the evidence, and form a model that best squares with that."

Except that we only have REAL records of less than 200 years of temperature changes… yet all temperature models work in thousands or MILLIONS of years…

And there is no question about who is causing it. It's humanity. No need for any denial, we have all the research done. There is no arguments either, unless you listen to far right excuses.
There are MANY questions! Many THINK that it is humanity’s fault - and they MAY be right.

But it’s awfully arrogant to assume that this MUST be correct when we have very little actual knowledge. Recorded human history is only a few thousand years - yet climate change has occurred for hundreds of millions of years!

This sounds like sarcasm. As a fan of technology myself AND an actual programmer, I don't think we are the most intelligent type. The most intelligent type is the people who focus on what they DON'T know. Science always includes assumptions after all, not just knowledge. When you start focusing on what you don't know, you realize you aren't that knowledgeable, no one around you is either, and you shouldn't blindly trust what people say.

I've asked for this before? Can the Dunning-Kruger climatologists in this thread please contact the Texas Railroad Commission and remove all these expensive climate rules I have to follow so I can make a ton of cash? Thanks.
