video independence science fireworks found

Watching a fireworks display on Independence Day is an American tradition. The visuals produced by the explosive pyrotechnics as they propel through the sky can be awe-inspiring for both adults and children alike. But have you ever stopped to consider the science that goes into making such a show possible?

If so, the American Chemical Society's latest "Reactions" video will be right up your alley. In it, Washington College chemistry professor John A. Conkling reveals how the familiar rockets and other neat products that light up the night sky all represent chemistry in action.

Even if you can't keep up with all of the scientific lingo, there's still plenty of useful information to take away from the clip. For example, did you know that blue is the hardest color to produce pyrotechnically?
