Thoughts on Vista/What is Your Problem With Vista

or it could be the motherboard isn't approved for vista.

i've been noticing more and more lately that motherboards are being stamped with approval. so count the motherboard in next to the ram.

If the install fails during the file copy process the most common culprit is bad RAM.

The RAM is alright, I've checked with memtest in dosmode.
Even tried different amounts of RAM inserted..there's a 4GB bug that some people encounter.
Wonder if anything of the trouble installing Vista x64 is because of HPET mode was set to 32bit mode. 64bit is an option. I'll have to try that..

I was going to post a new thread to ask about Vista and gaming rigs, as I plan to build a new rig after Christmas, then I saw this thread.

I'll confess I didn't read the whole thing (who could it's 22 pages long), but I read several at the start and then a few in the middle and then the last few pages (sort of a time scan as things progressed with Vista users here).

Hmm, my confidence for installing Vista for a GAMING RIG is greatly shaken, or is that shattered? I think I'll stick with my 32bit XP for now until at least a Vista SP is released.

Can someone tell me if they are able to run Steam games ok in Vista: HL2 and it's Episodes and spin-offs (CSS, DOD..etc.)? The point being, why bother getting a 8800GTX or some other Dx10 compat card if I'm not going to run Vista?.... thus my concern.

Any suggests or info is greatly appreciated gents.

At this time, Vista is not your OS of choice for gaming. Direct-X 10 is not that big of a deal at this time. Experts say it will be another year or two before it becomes mature enough to bother. Also, XP is shown to run games about 3% faster than Vista. Getting the new cards will still give you better graphics and speeds than the older ones.

I like Vista w/ exception of drivers by HP

Vista OS in my book is O.K.
But, lack of Vista compliance by peripheral manufacturers like HP and the like is troubling.
My wifes HP laptop keeps uninstalling the HP Network printer because of a conflict with its driver and Vista OS. We fix it with the patch provided but, when Vista does its automatic updates, it uninstalls the printer again.
Oh well, the price we have to pay for progress!

What does that "approval" mean in real life?

For example, the last mainboards without ACPI support were some Pentium II ones (or from that era), what else could cause a board not being "approved" ?

I mean a real technical reason, not just that "it isn't tested".

bostonh8er, i think it's best you make a new topic in the correct forum for that.

now, on topic.
I installed "Vista Buisness N x64 NL", 2 days ago, had some troubles getting everything to work(lack of driver support).
Vista itself works very good, and with the prefetch it really speeds up everything(i use the same programs allot).

The bigest problem are the drivers:
  • Asus doesn't have vista drivers for my a8n-sli deluxe, so had to go to the realtek site to get my sound drivers.
  • Had to disable the game & midi port(don't need them & vista doesn't support it anymore)
  • Creative drivers for my SB audigy 2(have the 2nd soundcard for fun :p) didn't work at first(don't know why, maybe after vista updated it worked :x)
  • My Hp printer isn't supported by vista + no drivers from hp, it's a photosmart 1000, it's an older printer, and there are no plans to make drivers for vista. Solution was to install it as a Deskjet 930c/932c/935c(driver in vista).

No problems running 32bit apps. Don't game much and haven't tested allot of games, but everything seems to work.
I waited till now(have vista since it came out, get if free from school :D) to install vista, mostly waiting for SP1(RC1 just came out) and driver support.

Things will get beter(drivers/software), it was the same with winXP

Simply put? Vista sucks. I've had it for nearly a week now on my new laptop and all I've had thus far is one crash after another. I also have networking issues. I can connect to the internet no problem, however file sharing and printer sharing are miserable to the point that the Vista wizard and the XP wizards don't like each other and I'm no networking person. I've yet to 'see' my desktop and printer and I've been working on it for three days. Comcast says they'll hook it up but they want $50 to do it. Now bears the question am I willing to part with $50 over something I ought to be able to do myself?

Probably a hardware problem, not Vista. I'd return it.

Go to network and sharing Center. You just need to go through the list and enable network discovery, file sharing, printer sharing and media sharing.

Good post Mirob,
Computer manufacturers are installing Vista on every hardware configuration, regardless if Vista will run on it or not, it seems

What`s so bad about vista

Let me count the crashes ....

XP SP2 has become so stable I don`t beleive many expected vista would be sucha a crappy OS. I like the features and the look. The security controls suck big time so I turned them off. I laughed out loud when I started seeing the permission requests - just like Apple portrayed it in their Mac commercials - truth in advertising. The worst thing about Vista is the crashing - blue screens, reboots from nowhere and lock ups. I`ve read a lot about Video controller compatability and think that may be part of my issue also (I run an ATi Radeon 9500 Pro). I also have the Hauppauge 150, and possibly an assortment of USB devices (not sure yet) that have been giving me grief.
I remember upgrading from WinMe to WinXP and my video card at the time did not have proper XP drivers. I did not get all the potential functionality out of the card, but at least it did not crash my system constantly. I would say that MS missed the boat on this one.

It's funny because I went to HP's website and guess what? They put these laptops on the market just before they were ready. Every single piece of hardware had an update dated anywhere from 9/07 to 11/07.

I did updates on everything but still had the problem so I came here and guess what? Someone else was having the exact same issue. Fix?

Disable Norton Firewall. Something that came with it, believe me I hate Norton! Anyways, I can now "See" everything! Printer and desktop!

Don't 'cha love computers!

I hope you enabled the Vista's own firewall after disabling Norton's.

Crash analysis kept complaining about my ATI video card. After reading some of the posts on this site, I added another .5 GB RAM and the system settled down. The screen saver or mouse movement used to be enough to crash the system. Has now been running 9 hours without a crash.

Oops! Forgot to! Thanks for saying something, LOL! I did try to add a rule to Norton but it didn't work. I completely forgot to enable Vistas. Appreciate your having my back. Take care!
