I think it's worth noting that this is a question that is being asked on a site that's totally against illegal torrenting. I wouldn't take all the answers at full face value here.

Imagine if someone, who uses this site for help alot, decides to admit here that torrenting is their passion...can't be very good you would think if any "helpers" pick up on that, no?

I'll bet if this question was open to guest comments the result would be a whole lot different.

No, I don't think that's why.
As in correlative studies; there is no way to tell cause and effect. There's bidirectional ambiguity as to if techspot forum members have a lower rate of piracy, or if the lower rate of piracy induces people to post/vote on techspot.
Also there's that performance article on the leaked copy of crisis bullet storm or whatever it was.
