Back and Forth: President Trump has announced a 90-day pause on new tariffs against all countries except China, just a week after what experts called a "nuclear bomb" on global trade. Global reciprocal tariffs have been reduced to 10%, while anti-China taxes have surged to a historic 125%.

The decision marks a sharp reversal from the steep tariffs the President announced on April 2, which included significant duties on imports from countries such as Japan (24%), Vietnam (46%), and Cambodia (49%).

Last week's announcement sent markets into disarray: Nintendo delayed pre-orders for the recently announced Switch 2, customers rushed to Apple Stores fearing imminent price hikes, two laptop manufacturers paused US shipments, and Micron raised SSD prices, just to name a few.

Alright, I think people knew of the tariff pause and traded it beforehand. You can see before Trump posted "buy" on Truth Social, traders opened $QQQ $TQQQ and $SPY calls RIGHT BEFORE THE NEWS, someone opened $SPY 509 calls, expiring TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Those calls are up 2100% in one hour.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump claimed that the US has begun new trade negotiations with over 75 countries, framing the pause as a successful intimidation tactic. However, billionaire Elon Musk and members of the President's own party have criticized the tariffs, which far exceeded expectations.

Some analysts are now questioning whether market activity surrounding the announcement points to deliberate stock manipulation.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that the current universal reciprocal tariff rate stands at 10%. However, The Washington Post noted that the total tariffs on Mexico and Canada remain unclear, possibly ranging between 10% and 35%. Trump appears to have stepped back from a full-blown global trade war just hours after the April 2 tariffs went into effect – but tensions with China are intensifying. The economic fallout could significantly impact prices and the availability of many goods.

To recap: on April 2, the President raised anti-China tariffs to 54%, and later increased them to 104%. In response, China imposed an 84% tariff on US imports and began restricting exports of rare earth metals – a move that eerily mirrors the plot of Call of Duty: Black Ops II, which was released in 2012 and set in the year 2025. The White House then retaliated with the latest increase to 125%.

TL;DR: The new U.S. tariff rate against our two largest trading partners is either 10%, 25% or 35%, and so far no one I've reached out to at the White House is able to tell me which.

The pause on most tariffs for countries like Vietnam and Cambodia will likely bring relief to companies such as Nintendo, which had already begun shifting manufacturing away from China. However, divesting from the country is difficult.

A recent Bloomberg report highlights that products like laptops, smartphones, batteries, and other small appliances are still heavily dependent on Chinese imports. Even when devices aren't assembled in China, they rely on supply chains that run through China and many other countries.

China should just stop all shipments to and from china in both directions.

that would shut down all:
ALL US domestic OEM car manufacturing
ALL US cpu/gpu and computer/PLC/Robotics/solar panel/modern medical equipment manufacturing in the US

They should also impound US ships at the harbor.. the US cannot do anything about it.

Well, you have to treat this like a war… even if it’s not the military kind…. And the first victim in any war is the truth… don’t believe anything coming out of anyone’s mouths until this is all over…
Precisely, it's a trade war. Trump is leveraging Americas buying power in order to get trade concessions for American businesses and to encourage manufacturing to return to the USA. The numbers will change daily, the corporate owned news is attempting to smear him with headlines in the middle of it all which always helps to muddy things even further.

What's amusing me is that the attempts to smear Trump that make him look ruthless and stupid are probably helping his negotiations. His strategy seems quite clear and I don't really understand why anyone would oppose it. Unless of course you like sweat shops in Asia making most of our products.

Im more than happy to pay a little more to get a product made in an American factory by an American worker who gets the same worker protections and benefits as I do. Because that's what opposing this means, you want those sweat shops so you can get stuff for cheaper. And I think that's morally reprehensible.

Maybe all the peasant countries didn't kiss the ring enough

China has more power ,Trump folded like a bad toupee in the wind

Japan dropped a little boy by selling US treasury bonds, absolutely brilliant a double whammy.
Stock market tanking run to US treasury bonds. But Japan killed that , others followed

GOP made heaps on calls and puts as they play the US peasants. Have you thanked them yet ?

So let's see the gains.Instabilty in everything . USA still hates allies. Trust in USA at all-time low
Everyone else reducing dependence on USA . Myself canx Net Flix this month in protest
Tourism will still drop massively

So much winning

Switch 2 buyers are happy

Putain now happy Crude prices tending upward to feed the special operation- good doggy

Fox news and GOP enablers spin this as another trump brilliancy

I don't really see how increasing tariffs on china while pausing the increase, not removing the tariffs from everyone else is considered folding but alright

There's an article on this website where Nintendo states they're increasing the Switch 2 price because they can, not because of tariffs.

It's paused, except for China, because he's dealing with what, 30,40,50 countries wanting to negotiate the tariffs. That will take some time to finalize everything.
As for China, screw em! They've been stealing companies secrets for decades, then releasing cheaper versions of stuff, selling it on sites like Temu for a long time. Their economy isn't the best right now. Plus they have spent tons of money on building "ghost cities" among other things. China needs the world more than the world needs China. With several countries pulling manufacturing out of China for other countries, it's starting to hurt them.

All the people I follow were saying it's a negotiation tactic days ago. He does have the economic leverage to use since the US's trade benefits other countries more. For anyone who doesn't still doesn't understand, here's a great explanation:

Um..the Pacific Fleet might have something to say about that. As anyone with two functioning neurons would realize.

Yeah made a mistake , tariffs on China still stand if not increased
But I still posit China is stronger - like Russians with those sanctions , they know how to suffer

USA companies that make stuff In USA are highly dependant on inputs , so even USA based stuff will rise , add in uncertainty.

Switch 2 has increased , but big diff less importers fees of what was it 37% to 10 % from Japan - could be wrong on those numbers , but down to 10%

90% of tariffs vs China Trumps first term went to bail out farmers = Now farmers are panicking, especially as DOGE has torn up farm improvement cost sharing contacts . I assume farmers will take DOGE to court and win there, but that must be very stressful and cause some hardships and early deaths or strokes etc

A lot of stuff will sell out of Vietnam - Many Chinese operations their . Soya beans sent to Canada to sell to China ??

Anyway a complete mess.
Trade has made USA rich - this is basic trade 101
Tariffs are to protect some culture in a country or strategic long term purpose ie war , trade breakdowns etc due to pandemics , super volcano

Often it is done solely with subsidies instead

What no one seems to understand is hinted at all through the comments. China runs sweat shops, they dump goods at far below market value. In other words, they are running a bigger financial house of cards than we are. This whole thing of China flooding the markets is to corner the markets so they can extract control when the time comes. You think we're going to be in bad shape not being able to buy junk goods and higher priced toys and games, wait til you see what happens when their huge volume of junk shipped over gets cut in half or worse.

Like it or not, while this won't be fun for anyone, their in far worse shape than we are having been selling goods with no margins and depending solely on volume. While we'll have to find more expensive sources for some of these goods, we can afford it. They can't.

Ah yes, you're the usual internet "expert" here to explain that the Orange Turd isn't a grade-A brain-dead *****, but in fact playing 4D chess with the world's economy!

You could already buy American-made today. The only difference is that the same American-made will be more expensive tomorrow because of less competition and inflation.

So the ignorant Trump finally gives up by reversing 90% of his Tariffs, and leaving China's in place which is one that we will be affected the most by....what a *****.

Every consumer in the world will be affected by it, as U.S companies will raise their prices world wide to make up for the overall cost of the Tariffs imposed...I hear the U.K and Spain already started seen price increases on some key electronics items.

What happened to all the tariff bros on here?

A couple topics ago it was full steam ahead let's bring back American manufacturing why is everyone crying about their 529's and 401Ks and R2D2s?

Why did Trump blink? What's the plan? What's the strategy?

What folks dont quite get is bringing back manufacturing jobs doesnt increase american jobs. No american is going to go work in a sweat factory for pennies to the dollar.

manufacturing is done by robots now, not people.

Trump is purposefully trying to devalue the dollar. The post a few hours before his tariff pause says it all. go look at MTG's stock portfolio and when she made those trades.

Its all out in the open for everyone to see, its just most folks are too stupid to pay attention and are too worked up about partisan politics to care that the rich are just fleecing them more and more.

Trump way of doing business is to slap everyone around to show the dominance. China slapped back so he got furious. If someone thinks slapping everyone is as good in politics as it is in business, then probably should get less medicines. Now cost of most stuff in US will start to go up. And US companies ans citizens will eat all the cost, as there usually are no companies there to take over:

this guy is telling story of a simple souse bottle. And that is pretty common stuff.

Seems like the first ear-shot incident was staged with us flag prop background heroism. He came to fame with that photo shoot. Hopefully Americans are not dumb enough to believe him. But.....more than half of the americans voted for this loud-mouthed, arrogant U-turn guy. Hopefully he won't pull the rest of the world down along with him.

Whatever he does, and doing, is all for the rich guys in the us. Anything he does is not for America but for himself and his richest American friends.. Hopefully the people of the US realize this.

But I guess not.
