Twitch to stream live eSports event from the White House

In a bid to increase health insurance coverage among millennials, basketball star Shaquille O'Neal has announced a competitive gaming event that will take place live at the White House. Numerous eSports stars from around the gaming community will take part in the competition. Starting at 4PM ET on December 12th, the four-hour event will be streamed to Twitch. The "White House Competitive Gaming Event" will feature hit titles including Rocket League, Street Fighter V, and others. Notable attendees include members of NRG eSports as well as Justin Wong and Mike Ross.

The event hopes to raise awareness about the Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare. Millennials have historically had the highest uninsured rates. These rates saw a steep decline over the past few years, but there are still millions of uninsured young adults. By partnering with Twitch, the Obama administration hopes to attract some of its 9.7 million daily users. Twitch has a surprisingly engaged demographic with each user watching roughly 2 hours of content per day. This last push for enrollment comes just 3 days before the December 15th deadline prior to coverage beginning in 2017. 

President Obama will likely show up in a special appearance, too. The President along with the First Lady have consistently been advocates of physical activity and have promoted spending time away from screens, so the event definitely comes as a change of pace. It’s not the first time Obama has engaged with gamers though.

As the transfer of power between President Obama and Trump approaches, it appears the White House is doing all it can to sign young adults up for health insurance. The lighthearted event looks to be a fun mix of gaming and healthcare discussion. Maybe we'll even see President Obama pull off a few clutches or combos from behind the controller. Viewers can tune in here to watch the event.

Somehow I don't think it'll look too good Obama getting his butt kicked by some chubby, zit faced kid while being coerced by Trump at the same time to sign along the dotted line for some real estate caper and Michelle yelling for him to come and eat his supper before it gets cold. Prior to the ACA, I could get coverage for less than $200 per month. No longer. My parents, who could get it for less than $500 per month, now pay the penalty every year because "approved" plans *start* at $1,500 monthly with huge deductibles.

Affordable for who? My parents got stuck paying more for health insurance than for their house every month. To make matters worse, my mom had a stroke and the crappy insurance they had didn't cover but about 5% of the bills. Due to them having insurance the hospitals wouldn't work with them for financial aid... if they wouldn't have had insurance the hospitals would have cut the bills down dramatically. Next year they are dropping their insurance, paying the penalty, and if anything else happens at least the hospitals will work with them because they don't have insurance. It's pretty bad when the hospital specifically tells someone they would be better off without insurance because they won't work with you otherwise.
