Unsure about cookies

I recently investigated software that would allow me to browse the internet safely without giving out my ip address. I never really found what I was looking for but some software may have activated itself unknowingly to me because my browser (Mozilla Firefox) is not accepting any cookies at all and this is causing a browsing nightmare. I went through the standard motions to return the system to normal but it keeps defaulting back to "Do not accept cookies". I have a Dell Precision T5400 with (2) quad core intel xeon E5420@ 2.5GHz I am running a 64 bit version of windows 7 ultimate. Can someone please help me fix this problem?

Browser cookies are no in system code, so a restore point is futile. Instead, go through the browser settings. On Firefox, tools->Options will take you to what you need
