US prison system proposes total social media ban for inmates, sparking First Amendment concerns

Because it's the liberal policies that have messed up society. No cash bail. Not prosecuting unless the theft is over $1000. Heck, a police officer in New York was recently killed while on the job by someone who had been arrested 27 TIMES!!! How was this obvious criminal let loose back on the streets? Liberal polices, that's how.
Pretty sure the topic was social media in jails.

Inmates have no useful reason to even use a computer or Internet, so I would ban everything computer-related. They are in jail for a reason. Maybe if they hadn't derped up their lives they would be out living like the rest of us and not locked up.

The general right to communicate by mail or phone is well established in legal precedent, why should it be different for electronic means?

I assume by 'bleeding heart liberals' you mean those who think the Constitution is important. Like the Supreme Court, for instance.
why should we not have bazookas since we can own pistols and rifles? there is always a limit on what is allowed right? the internet gives way too much to people who committed crimes. you dont need the internet to survive in jail. prisoners have better cable tv than I have... though thats my choice.

How dare a black man spit at someone . Only whites have that first amendment right.
Why the US patriots who stormed the capital were peaceful sight seeing compared to this disgusting person. /S

I cant tell if you are being sarcastic... LOL :)

Social media restrictions for prisoners should be set up with the same or very similar restrictions as postal mail and/or phone calls already are; determining what level of communication prisons should have with the outside world is not a new problem.

And if the prisoners are using social media to communicate with outside gang members and the like, well let them. Just you know, monitor said communication and forward that to law enforcement in that jurisdiction. Should make catching more criminals easier.

And as for stuff like private communication with their attorneys, well the obvious solution to me would be to allow the prisoners to write stuff to an encrypted container of some sort, and then only allow them to email said attachments to a whitelist with their lawyer's email address in it. Do the same for receiving emails. Not really a difficult thing to implement.

The one caveat to what you wrote is that the Prison Authorities have the right to read, use as they see fit and even delete any and all encrypted communications...waaay too many Lawyers in the past have been willing or unwilling pawns in sending info to people that shouldn't know some things.

This is a very good example of a man sentenced because of the color of his skin and should have ben brought up for Federal appeal of his sentence. YES spitting on the police is not something people should be doing but giving
years for it is beyond the pale.them

Seems he wasn't a nice guy, will go to an appeal if like any normal country , more expense for the taxpayer . Think read in story - The Judge really wanted to make an example of him.
That does work in my country , we have sentencing guidelines, Judge has to show all the reasoning for adding and subtracting time

Too bad...want access to "social" media?
Do-Not-Break-The-Law!
Stay out of prison, problem solved.

Why do inmates even have access to the internet? Take away the internet, something they should never have had access to anyway, and this whole argument becomes a mute point.

In my country not sure how much internet prisoners have , cell phones banned etc to stop crime /drugs .
But prisoners should be allowed to work on their defence , many cases of prisoners overturning their cases . Maybe prisons have systems for submissions for information requests etc

OK, maybe it depends upon if the criminal has a chance of being rehabilitated or not along with the seriousness of the crime.

Obviously if the crime is particularly heinous, for instance... murder and/or manslaughter, then no; no Internet for you. If it's a lesser crime, then maybe... depending upon the behavior of the inmate.
