France's court just blocked Macron's plan to ban kids from social media

I have - still stand by it.

To enforce any age restrictions, EVERYONE must now provide id when making an account… you don’t see the problem there?
'They might resent it' is just not a good reason to stop telling children not to do something.
Where the something could just as easily be unhealthy eating, violence, theft, drugs, operating a motor vehicle, using a firearm, or what have you. There's nothing wrong with having rules and boundaries, and childhood is a good place to start. They crave them. They need them. They are mostly there to help them prevent harm to themselves and others.

Rules yes, unenforceable and unreasonable ones - no.

You could argue that children are probably just as skilled - if not more so -in using social media as adults are.

All this does is give companies (and then governments - and shortly after, hackers) access to everyone’s ID… this is police state disguised as protecting children. Don’t fall for it!

Obviously opinions vary on the 'unreasonable' part of it.

They also have great reflexes. But I still don't want them on the highway until they can be expected to handle a certain degree of responsibility.

It's more nuanced than that.
First of all it's about social media, not cell phones. Social media can be accessed from any sort of device.
Is it communism to ban cigarettes and alcohol for kids? I don't think so, and social media is probably even more harmful.

My kids are 16+ already and seamlessly passed through all that, but we have many friends with younger kids and it's not at all that simple. You can't just hand them a plain Nokia with 1 square inch screen, they'll be ridiculed, which is equally bad. I mean it's not something the majority of parents can handle on their own, establishing some restrictions to protect kids is necessary.
- Alcohol and cigarettes can only be harmful; there’s no other possibility.

- Social media is just a form of communication, and its effects depend on how you interact with it.

I don't think children (under 12) should even have cell phones, but once they're older than that, it's good to start helping them develop a sense of discipline and responsibility for their actions.

That's not true. Alcohol can actually be very fun and helpful to make people loosen up and have a way better time than being sober

Driving is more than reflexes - just as social media is more than computer/tech skills… but children tend to be no worse (and often far better) at using social media properly as they’ve never experienced life without it - while many of us older types can remember a time without it.

The importance is on parents - we’ve lost that accountability as a society and we are now learning to regret it.

Kids should not have phones in schools, it's a no-brainer. To call banning them 'communism' is so dumb.
I don’t have a problem with banning things AT SCHOOL - I’m a teacher and enforcing rules for elementary students is doable… but why are we banning them from social media? If a parent thinks their kid(s) can’t handle it, then THEY should ban it - and bring up their children so they actually respect and obey their parents (hint, try saying “no” to your kid!!).

The government has long been banned from our bedrooms - they should also be banned from our kids…
