My old computer fried, and I inherited this one from a friend. However it is loaded with viruses, I get pop ups all the time, and the computer is running way slower than it should be. AVG usually finds around 25 infections, but can never remove them. If anybody can help it would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Have you considered re-formatting and re-loading your software? It's time consuming but it gives you a clean slate. Otherwise, I found that following Julio's 8 steps really helped. I was at the point of re-formatting and starting over. Perhaps you should have another anti-virus program.

Hello DC5

You have two antivirus programs running, AVG8 and Symantec/Norton ->

"Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and will typically cause your computer to crash, and will provide less protection.
Not more."

If I may suggest ? I would remove them both and then install a less recourse using Antivirus - you decide ;)

Good advice, however i'm not sure what my best options are...what antivirus program are you running?

I´m running http://www.eset.com/smartsecurity/

But, we only recommend FREE antivirus in our forum, if users want to buy a antivirus program/package after we have cleaned the computer, it´s their decision ;)

However, I would recommend this solution ->

Uninstall your AVG Antivirus
Run the AVGRemove Tool

Reboot.

Download the Norton Removal Tool (SymNRT) to your Desktop.

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
Once downloaded please close ALL open browsers, also save any work because this may require a restart.

Go to your desktop and double click on the removal tool and then click Setup.
Once open Click Next
Accept the license agreement and click Next
Type in the letters/numbers that you see into the text box then click Next.
Then click Next and the tool will start running.
Once finished restart the PC and run the tool again to ensure everything has been removed.
Delete Nortonremoval tool from your Desktop.

Restart

Install Avira Free AntiVirus, from here ->
Avira
Or: Avast

Install, update it, run a complete systemscan.

Reboot, attach new hijackthis log

Great :)

Please download Combofix:
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe

And save to the desktop.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:
Name the file as CFScript
and Save it on the desktop

Killall::

Snapshot::
File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\zahariho.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\lomokafu.dll

http://www.fromsej.saknet.dk/billeder/cfscript.gif

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

Combofix will create a logfile and display it after your computer has rebooted. Usually located in c:\combofix.txt, please attach it to your next post

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
