Well . . . looses support is more accurate:
  • After April 11, 2017, Microsoft will no longer support Windows Vista: no new security updates, non-security hotfixes, free or paid assisted support options, or online technical content updates, Microsoft says. (Mainstream Vista support expired in 2012.) Like it did for Windows XP, Microsoft has moved on to better things after a decade of supporting Vista.

Don't get me wrong, I never did think Vista was all that bad. To me it was out the window when 7 came out.

As far as alternative anti-virus applications, there are several available for free. It has been so long since I used anything but Windows default, I don't have a definitive selection.
 
Understood. I saw this thread & read the link jobeard added & decided I'd try to help a friend rescue his pc which I'm working on now.
