Editor's take: It’s a neat parlor trick, for sure, but one has to think that the novelty of it would quickly wear off. What’s more, most people I know still use smartphone cases to protect their pocket computers, thus rendering the visual effect useless because it would be hidden behind the case.

Chinese technology company Vivo has shared a video of a prototype smartphone featuring a color-changing rear panel.

The technology behind the wizardry is called electrochromism, a phenomenon in which the color or opacity of a material (in this case, glass) can change as voltage is applied to it. It’s similar in concept to what you might have seen some window companies pitching at CES in recent years to control the amount of light and heat coming into your home or office.

Vivo has taken the idea and applied it to a smartphone, allowing you to change the color of the rear panel. In the teaser shared on Weibo, it appears as if the prototype can only switch between silver and a purplish/blue color.

Given the added cost that such a feature would no doubt impose, it feels like an ill-advised idea all around.

No word yet on when or if Vivo plans to bring the technology to market in a future phone.

In case colors change is too fast, it should include a sickness kit. ?

Is Vivo trying to come up with the new definition for "useless"? This is by far the sh###est idea for a phone I've seen.

No point what so ever especially given that nearly half of smartphone users have cases on their expensive glass sandwiches.

Based on the video, they either have a phone with huge clear plastic/glass insets and a taped up camera, or it wasn't a phone at all and only demonstrated the color changing technology. Either way, I'm not impressed lol.

LOL and if you don't put it in a PROTECTIVE case, it will slip out of your fingers,
and crash to the ground.
Another gimmick!

Definitions:

Pointless feature for mindless consumers = anything I would never use.
Hot new must-have technology = anything I really like.

The back of my el cheapo Samsung A10e is plastic and changes color depending on the angle the light hits it at. It goes from black to blue to violet. I never see it because I use a case. A color changing back on a phone is a waste of time and a useless gimmick.

It's just like RGB on every single computer component. Pointless? yes. But people will still flock to it like moths to flames.

I like it, they should put the same tech on a case as I haven’t used a phone without a case since they had buttons. Oh and also that way I could have it on my iPhone as there’s no way I would downgrade to Android jus to get it!
