Walmart will finally accept Apple Pay and Google Pay starting August 24

This is a welcome change. I get 2% back using Apple Pay with my Apple Card on my watch. It always annoyed me that Walmart didn't accept Apple Pay.

The USA is so behind in this aspect. in Canada, when I was in high school they had interact machines everywhere. in the states, people where still using cheques

Walmart seems to have mistaken market share with mind share. People go there to buy goods and services. They DO NOT necessarily go their to participate in Walmart's ecosystem. Hell, most people probably don't even like the company. They participate out of need, not want.

The fact that Walmart is only now implementing standardized NFC payments tells me that they have accepted defeat. It also tells me that they have finally accepted their place in the system. The lack of Apple or Google Pay (as much as I personally dislike these services) implies an unspoken lack of viability about the Walmart Pay system that the company is now forced to acknowledge. They honestly thought they could force adoption by simply making the competitors unavailable, but numbers don't lie. No amount of corporate speak can convince people that a sh*t sandwich tastes like gold.

"There can be no resonable expectation of privacy in public"

See, the problem is not that there is no expectation of privacy in public; that is a given. The problem is the standard of decency, or lack thereof, and we our collective behavior is―for better or worse―astoundingly worse than it was even 50 years ago.

There has never been an expection of privacy, but there used to be an expectation of decorum. The problem is not that there are cameras everywhere, the problem is what the presence of the cameras imply: that everyone is about to be caught committing a crime. A society that expects crime, instead of assumes good faith among the crowd, and lives is in a perpetual state of fight-or-flight. Such a low-trust society is full of strangers, completely devoid of any semblance of familial or community bonds. The United States, and the West in general, is supposed to a melting pot of disparate groups, all working towards a common goal of a better tomorrow. Instead, we are all a bunch of slightly more evolved homunculi, looklng for our next mark, and EVERYONE is a target.

If our founding fathers were alive today, do you think they'd be proud of the constituency of the United States? Do you think they would feel like their sacrifice was worth it? Or do you think, if they saw what we have devolved into, the mindless dolts we have collectively become, they would wish the British had won?

The worst part of shopping at Walmart is checking yourself out while they record your face and financial details to build a profile on you. Compared to that, I couldn't possibly care less about their payment processors.

Just order online and use delivery or grocery pickup if you want to avoid the POS cameras. Bonus: you don't even have to go inside the store (and deal with the unsavory public that Walmart attracts)
