Want to go back to '98SE

Also, if you have/get a DVD burner you won't be able to handle full DVD isos - because they'll be over 4 gig and FAT32 can't handle files that large. You won't be able to mount NTFS volumes on removable drives. You can't lock the machine from use if someone has physical access. You lose true multi-user profiles if you have more than one user on that machine. You limit your networking capabilities (might not be an issue - doubt you have a domain set up there if you don't like 2k and XP.) You can't play DOOM 3 - that should be enough in itself.

Doh! I'm not trying to promote Win98 here! j/k
Guess you can scratch that one drawback off the list.

..you will have to go to ms and get a patch/update, [and i don't recall the # right now], to be able to run the 9x series os's on anything over, [if i remember right], 2.1 ghz
..AND for the uninitiated, YOU CAN USE UP TO 1.5gb RAM WITH THE 9X OS'S!!!, [and that's right from the horses mouth, MS, itself!!, [admittedly, you DO have to do some MAJOR tweaking here and there, i've got the bulletins on here somewhere, there's a number of them],
..personally, on my toy, i'm running 2.0gb, let me type that again, 2.0gb ram, on a PIII dually @1.8ghz, SSOOO, it CAN be done!!, AND no stability problems either, NO blue screens in over 3 years,

..you didn't say much about your technical background, so i'm not sure of what all you'll be staying up burning the midnight oil doing, a lot of times when one 'sails the uncharted seas' it seems a major voyage, especially with all the detractors saying it can't be done

Thanks to everyone for the responses. I guess basically the only things I do with my pc are play either Ultima or The Sims and the odd 'net game, and surf. I don't watch or burn dvds but do burn the occasional cd. I got a cd / dvd burner combo (external, ugh) which I haven't installed yet, and 512 more mb of ram (256 now). It's a p4 2.6 ghz w/400mhz front side bus, intel 3D extreme graphics, 40 gb Samsung hd, sblive digital sound, optical usb mouse, broadcom eth card, 56k pci modem (what? they still have dialup?). I honestly don't know what the mobo is cause I haven't dug around in this one yet. I'll eventually have to hook up with my nephew via router and he's got winxp (I don't think it'll matter what o/s we're using?) and until I've actually got the cd/rw in my hands I won't know if I can get 98 drivers for it.
Re 'techical background', I'm a dos geek - I love it and can do pretty much anything I need to in it. Ran a bbs for a few years way back. My first pc was a packard bell that last a looooong time. within the first week I took it apart & put it back together to see if I could and within a month there were none of the factory parts left in it. If I can get the eth card installed I can find what I have to, I think. Aside from getting the drivers installed for the hardware, I can't conceive of anything I won't be able to run that I currently do. When I lose interest in these current games, then xp's easy enough to put back on, I guess.

1. That is correct, a router only needs an o/s that supports TCP/IP (even Mac and Linux computers could work on a router with Windows 95 or higher computers)

2. CD/DVD drives do not require drivers; they should be recognized by your motherboard (plug and play). The only thing you can download is firmware, but you should only update that if you have problems with the CD/DVD drive and that firmware will correct the issue.

Ermm.. Agent_J that's not quite correct. CD Drives DO require drivers, just that for 90% of the drives, the default Windows bundled drivers are very sufficient.

In regards to a router, to be totally technical, it doesn't need to support TCP/IP. However, I really would like to know where you'd find such a router.

Probably the best solution is a switch instead of a router, unless you're looking for advanced control over the network traffic.

Well, the interesting part to this whole discussion is that I ran this 'little program' called "Program Compatibility Wizard".. I set it to win 95 and checked the three boxes related to video, and the game actually ran for an hour before I quit out, instead of getting kicked out. It *wanted* to quit because sometimes the taskbar would kind of pop up, but something wouldn't allow it to interfere with the game. RTFM, right??! If I can set the compatibility mode for ALL of them and have them run, then I'm going to kiss my xp cd and be the biggest fan of xp on the planet!!

really? i didn't know they needed drivers, I've always just plugged them in and they worked

I guess it doesn't need TCP/IP, rather either an ethernet/wireless adapter. And I just checked, Linux won't work with PC/MAC networks, but it should be possible with PC/MAC, just the file sharing would be complicated.

This isn't true either :) I run linux and solaris on my PC & Mac network - they interact just fine. Some of the guys here also run BeOS among other things.

To concur with Papa: Mandrake 9 picked up my Windows based file sharing network fine, worked with all versions of Windows from 98FE to XP Home and Pro.

I don't recall the exact network transport for this. I believe it used netbios over IPX/SPX, but am not sure.

Uh, alt+tab? Also check that taskbar isn't always on top.

I hope I'm not turning you into a fan of XP now..

Yes, it's almost like the status bar at the bottom flickers onto the screen but then disappears again. Hey, I'm not gonna knock it - at least it's running!
I got my cd of the Origin games today. Darn manual's got 50 different ways to run the games, and 3 of them will NOT run under windows, only under dos, and not a shell, either...they want me to do the "files=40, dos=high" stuff, put variables after running command.com, etc etc., and it's way too much work. Funny, two years ago I could've told you exactly what was using what port, irq and DMA channel, and now I have no clue since it all seems so unimportant with these new os'. lol. Ultima VIII install was asking me what port my soundcard was on and I haven't the faintest idea. Something tells me that in a couple of months when I finally finish Ascension IX, I'm going to be buying a new fantasy RPG...that will likely require XP! ;) Anyway, back onto E-Bay goes the Origin set. (sigh)
On a positive note, I got my burner today, it's an Iomega super dvd/cd burner combo. I've never rented a dvd...I guess I can start, eh? It installed like a dream.

Hi There:wave:

Why don't you just install WIN 98 over, XP and make a doulble boot (ie WinXP ghost, instead of Win 98 Ghost) works great for ppl that need to use Win98

Hope it helps :hotbounce :hotbounce

Bye:wave:
