I found IMO, the most valuable feature of a scanner is to map the channel usage at your location. This gives you the opportunity to avoid the highly conjested channel(s) and to pick one that has little or no usage. My results were:

• inSSIDer - I started with this when it was free.
• NetSpot - an alternative, but also found it interfered with CHKDSK on Win/7 Pro

• WiFi Analyzer -- on Windows Store & requires Win/10 + Windows ID

I prefer LinSSID; quick install on Ubuntu and you're up and running.

For Windows, I have also used the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector with good results.

Both products are free.
