I need to clear/reset the MBR to remove a virus - will a standard windows format do this or should I use the manufacturers tools to perform a low level format? Or maybe another tool?

Just do a full format from the XP install disc, instead of using the quick format option

Why not use Windows Repair to write a new MBR instead? Then just format the drive as usual and re-install the OS.

I know about fixmbr but don't know if it will fix an mbr that windows thinks is OK.
I think I will have to do a full low level format to be sure.
thanks everyone!

It will. I've tried it.

But if you'd like to be thorough and do a full format, then that's great, being thorough is never a bad thing IMO. :)
