Windows 7 refuses to see USB audio sources as stereo

I have one of those LP turntables that feeds your computer digital audio over USB. However since getting a new laptop with Win 7 (old one was XP) I can't get it to see the audio as stereo. It's as if Win 7 expects USB audio to be a gamer headset or mic for using with Skype. Turntable vendor no help.

I may be way off base here, but Audacity
"might" be able to help.

Have you tried to change the default format in the sound control panel? sometimes its set at 1channel instead of stereo.
