Windows 7 services stopped in msconfig

All errors are logged in the event system log and will show up as Error xxx.
Other status logged can be: info, warning, error.
The details for each status are also logged, frequently with the device & module involved.

The latest entry is at the top, so scroll looking for Error I'd 31

@holdum323 do more reading & less posting would help your learning curve. There are more reasons for error 31 than DVDs/cdroms and references than just livewire.com. This is a driver issue and imo recommending another install because you don't understand is irresponsible. In such cases, just sit on the sidelines watching and reading would be a good choice imo

OK! Please explain why the OP can't go into devise manager and delete all those internet drivers. Also, why is there a GUID code for the internet adapter. Why does the OP get a Code 31when trying to install internet drivers? Why can't the OP upgrade to W7SP1. I would think that updating to SP1 would be very important. I'll watch and learn. I do a lot of reading. I just read how to do a W7 repair, but not sure how that will work if W7 is not updated to SP1 first? https://www.lifewire.com/how-to-perform-a-startup-repair-in-windows-7-2626170

Jobeard gave you the right solutions just not quite enough info though.
Go tro mfgr website and download all the motherboard drivers starting with the chipset driver followed by all network drivers wired and wireless as well as video and audio drivers....then install chipset driver first followed by the others.
This is the right path to getting ALL the drivers refreshed and making your life more simple. ;)

@holdum323 Yet another install does not address the fundamental issue - - missing drivers.
Last time I ordered an off-the-shelf system, the drivers were already installed by the OEM.

If you've ever built a system from scratch -- OR -- replaced an HD, the install process frequently takes two approaches:
  1. install the drivers Before the system
  2. or install them after the system is running
In either case, you get to set-n-fetch-it to find the correct drivers for you specific platform+hardware.

That solution works for EVERYONE, as not everyone as some prior history and some image to fall back upon.

btw: here's the definitive list of driver errors

You know I just reread the whole thread and I think we are missing something here....the poster alludes to all network drivers
are yellowed out which means the networking component of Windows is blown and if SFC /scannow did not fix this nothing will.
I think you need to reinstall Windows as trying to repair the networking component is the most difficult area of Windows to fix and personally I have never done so successfully myself. Do we know if the user has used an reg cleaner or system optimizer here? That would really help us and bury him if he did. By any chance was this system upgraded from Vista to Windows 7?

hmm; I've never failed to correct a driver flagged by uninstalling the driver, rebooting and reinstalling with a fresh driver.

SFC will correct permissions, ownership and bring fresh DLLs when necessary, but it never fetched a replacement driver for me. And to be clear, MS Udate will never access the vender site and pull down a newer driver either.

TCP is reset by using:
  • Type netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt and press Enter. When you run this command, it'll rewrite your computer's registry keys use for TCP/IP settings. This achieves the same result as removing and reinstalling the protocol.

  • netsh winsock reset is useful command that you can use in Microsoft Windows to reset winsock catalog back to default setting or clean state. You can try this if you are having following Internet access or networking problems but still failing to resolve the problem after trying all other suggestions.
There are two kinds of permission issues which can muck-up our efforts:
  • Directory Ownership & Permissions
  • Registry Permissions
but usually, those have reasonable error messages associated with them.

My fear is that a Clean Install will just circle back to bite us again - - UNLESS the HD is wiped clean - - Can this be tolerated?

Hi @Rich M . I'm glad someone finally read the whole thread. The OP stated that they could not update to SP1. That tells me there is a major problem. It's been awhile sense I ran W7, but I'm thinking that SP1 came as a update. I might be wrong about that.
You also raised more interesting questions. My thoughts are if the PC can be upgraded to W7SP1, then drivers could be considered. Anyway I have had my say and I gave it my best shot. I'm not perfect and I won't always get it right, but I'll always give it a good effort. Good luck. I have nothing more to add.:D

Sorry guys, been busy on another pc, the answers regarding upper and lower filters is a red herring because my issue is with network adapters not cd/dvd drive. I have been into event viewer and system log and can't find any reference to error 41, maybe I'm looking in the wrong place, my system log had about 56.000 entries.
Loading new drivers doesn't seem to help as they still have the error 31 showing.
Not sure if there is a link but I have noticed WMI doesn't appear to be working and as the win 7 is old I tried updating to SP1 a few times but everytime it fails.

Sorry! One more post. Has anyone read this reply from OP about not being able to update to SP1? Would SP1 not have updated internet drivers??

No Holdum Sp1 would not have updated drivers however until it is done no updates will be available and that includes drivers.
You ca do SP1 as an update or download it from Microsoft.com but another thing to wonder which could also be why system won't update to SP1 or install any netwrok drivers is do we have a legitimate version of Windows here to begin with?

I had thought of the rollup but as I can't get SP1 on the laptop I can't use it, I am thinking that with all the issues in the background a reformat and reload may be the only answer.

I realize it sounds crazy but clean install of Windows really makes the most sense and Hodsocks is right besides you need SP1 onboard to use the update rollups anyway. When you think about it it makes no sense at all to clean install Windows 7 then update to SP1 and do 600 Windows updates....sounds like a 4 day project where using the Windows Media Fall Creator dvd would take a half hour include most Windows Updates and is still free using the Windows 7 Coa. Oh and then you would not have to do this all over again in a year and 3/4 when Windows 7 goes out of support?

But then if time means nothing to you.........

You've expended extraordinary efforts with no improvements thus far -- IMO it's time to consider a major upgrade to a 64bit laptop with Win/10 (jeez, did I just say that?).

I finally resorted to reloading the software which has resolved all of the issues, thanks for your help and suggestions guys.
