Windows 7 unusual update problem

I am running a genuine win 7 home premium, the problem is windows update wont run, when i go to updates it says, check for updates for your computer, when i press the button it says the service isnt running i may have to restart my computer, i have tried restarting and switching on win updates but always get the same message help please anyone ?

What antivirus/anti spyware programs do you have installed. You don't by chance have a trial version of Norton installed do you?
