I really think that windows explorer is the cause of the problems I'm having...When I reboot, or start up, it takes several minutes for the icons to show up and virtually every time I click on an icon, I get a message that windows explorer has stopped working...the computer will not recognize the "K' drive that is my external seagate storage disk...management shows it having a "RAW" format, even though I have been using the thing for several years....can anyone give me some suggestions short of reformatting or buying another computer....Lord but I hate Vista!

Hello,
It seems that your OS is corrupted but I can see 2 different problems here, first I would try to solve IE issue, so first try to to scan for viruses using malwarebytes SW (http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebyt...4572.html?part=dl-10804572&subj=dl&tag=button ), combined with Microsoft Security Essentials from Microsoft (http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/)
after installing both, reboot and access safe mode with F8 when you see your first screen, then scan within safe mode
after you complete both scans on safe mode, try an startup repair and see if it works, you will not loose your data, follow the link...

I don't think it's explorer problem as cerverus said. Just format and reinstall the os. That should do.
