Windows starts but doesn't finish

Hi. I'd be really grateful for some help! Since 22/6 my pc hasn't booted into Windows (XP, SP3): the Windows startup window appears for about 30s, then screen goes dark & all hdd activity seems to stop. (But monitor stays on, without the expected No video signal message or whatever). CTRL-ALT-DEL does nothing, so I have to press the reset button. I can boot into safe mode, but I don't have networking/online access even if I choose safe mode with networking. (Poss because I use a usb wifi adaptor?). Booting into last known good configuration doesn't have any effect, nor does System Restore (2 restore points tried). I don't remember anything untoward happening on 21/6. I've posted on the Virus & Malware forum, but I've been told that nothing looks suspicious. Any ideas please?

Thanks to both of you for your suggestions. When building the PC , I included a 2nd hdd with XP on it, so am using this way in while weighing up my options. At least I've got access to my files etc that weren't included in last back-up! So I can take my time & do more investigation before doing anything drastic. Regards, & thanks again.
