XP will not load, even in safe mode...error when trying to reinstall

XP goes into an endless cycle through F8 screen...will not go to any option, i.e., command prompt, safe mode with network, etc. I attempted to reinstall XP from factory disc. Goes through a portion of loading basic files, then stops saying "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer". The error is shown at the bottom and says, "STOP: 0x0000007E (0x000001D, 0x8081234, 0xF7B84C50, 0xF7B8494C). Ideas, anyone?

What make is your harddrive and what security software are you running?

Check your cables to see if they are secure, particulalry the cable attaching your harddrive to your motherboard.
