If Apple sold MacOS and iOS their software division would have made a lot of money, because many didn't want to pay their outrageous prices for their computers and the associated upgrades.Apple make MacOS and iOS available to install on any hardware outside of their ecosystem; they have absolutely nothing to gain by doing that.
Unlike Sony and MS, Nintendo is in the habit of turning a profit off their hardware from day 1, it is not a loss leader.
So Nintendo is making money off the switch, it is making 100% of the money off its 1st party IPs, and it is likely taking a nice 30% cut off of any 3rd party game on its system as well.
Also, as an old school Japanese corp, they might be approaching things more from a sustainable business perspective rather than the traditional American MBA mindset of growth every quarter at all costs. Having some scarcity of their product to drive demand is a good thing.
