What just happened? Look at any list of the greatest games of all time, and there's a good chance The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will be near the top – if not number one. Now, CD Projekt has announced that the RPG has sold 50 million copies worldwide since its 2015 release, making it the ninth best-selling game ever.

CD Projekt CFO Piotr Nielubowicz revealed the new figures in the company's Q1 financial results video. "I would like to make an announcement which fills us with pride: The Witcher 3 has now been purchased by over 50 million gamers," he said.

Nielubowicz adds that, according to publicly available data, the Witcher 3 now ranks among the top ten best-selling games in video game history. Wikipedia places it (along with the Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions) at ninth.

There are only two games above The Witcher 3 on the top-sellers list that were released after CD Projekt's title: Red Dead Redemption 2 in eighth place (53 million) and PUBG: Battlegrounds in fifth (75 million).

Nielubowicz also said that the combined sales of all three Witcher games and the expansions had reached a massive 75 million copies. "This makes us even more excited with what the future holds, and with our upcoming projects set in the Witcher universe."

CD Projekt Red has already confirmed several Witcher games are in development. There's Project Polaris, presumed to be the Witcher 4, which isn't set to arrive until 2025 at the earliest; a remake of the first Witcher game featuring an open world; and a separate game in the franchise developed by The Molasses Flood called Project Sirius, which was recently rebooted. There's also a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, but we'll probably have real braindances and cyberwear by the time it comes out.

Away from the Witcher games, Nielubowicz also talked about the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 expansion, the Idris Elba-starring Phantom Liberty. The company is preparing for a communications campaign promoting the new content, starting with its appearance at the Summer Game Fest - which takes places on June 8 - where a release date for Phantom Liberty will be revealed.

Separately, President and joint CEO of CD Projekt, Adam Kicinski, squashed rumors that Sony was looking to acquire the company. "CD Projekt is not for sale," he emphasized.

The Witcher 3 remains this writer's most beloved game of all time. If you haven't seen Geralt for a while, the next-gen update has added a load of bells and whistles, including more advanced graphics settings.
