Asus ROG Xbox Ally X20

Overview

The Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X were already the best value in PC handhelds this year, and Asus expands the lineup with a reasonably affordable OLED model. The X20 does have some software quirks that I've unfortunately come to expect from Windows handhelds. Still, if you have the cash for it, it's hard to imagine a better handheld gaming PC that you could buy right now without stretching for a $2,000 device.

The new Asus ROG Xbox Ally X20 is a significant upgrade compared to last year's model, but at the same time a bit disappointing. The changes to the chassis with rubberized grips, improved sticks and buttons are great and it also looks amazing with the semi-translucent chassis and yellow/golden accents. It simply feels like a premium device. The biggest change, however, is the new and larger 7.4-inch OLED screen.

The 20th anniversary edition of the Xbox Ally X feels and looks amazing. If you really love OLED displays and want the most comfortable handheld, this is it.

A celebration of the ROG brand, the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X20 is a cool collector's item, with a great new OLED screen and an eye-catching design. However, with performance that's about the same as last year's Xbox Ally X, it's a hard sell at $1,299.

The Asus ROG Xbox Ally X20 is everything I want in a handheld: an OLED screen, TMR joysticks, Hall Effect triggers, and a transforming D-Pad. It is immensely comfortable for long play sessions and has impressive battery life. The downside is that devices like this one are caught in the current RAM and storage crisis, so while I love it, not everyone can afford it.

Like the Xbox Ally X, whether you think the ROG Xbox Ally X20 is worth the money depends upon the games you play. If you’re mostly a Steam gamer, it might not be worth it. But if you have games scattered across multiple stores, you’ll likely appreciate the flexibility.

A gorgeous OLED display, streamlined controls and transparent case make the ROG Xbox Ally X20 a very special handheld – but one with no power boost and which you’ll pay through the nose to own

And until I look more closely at Intel-based alternatives, returning to the Ally does remind me that if you can accept that this remains a portable PC and not a dedicated console handheld, and it still delivers a good experience - one that is further enhanced via its beautiful display.

If you're in the market for a powerful handheld gaming PC, but not looking to spend over $2,000 on a Windows 11 handheld like the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ or the Lenovo Legion Go Gen 2; the Ally X20 feels more like the best Goldilocks option. The OLED screen is a nice addition to a handheld console with decent battery life and a mostly versatile operating system. The Ally X20 is perfect for anyone with large game libraries across multiple PC gaming storefronts, assuming you want to handle something that's a bit more chunky than a Steam Deck.
