2 Hard drives

I actually got all of the computer parts from my friend because he didn't need them. They are all brand new.
Anyways, I don't think he ever got a case for the parts (the tower) so I don't even have an on and off switch for the motherboard.
I'm using an old case from another computer. Would an on and off switch from an older case make any difference for the PSU and motherboard?

Are you saying the power button on the front of the case, which is then plugged into PWR pins on the motherboard ?

If not, then just keep looking for PWR and RST and LED pins on the motherboard (as described above)

Then just touch (I know it sounds scary) with a small flat screwdriver across PWR pins (2 pins) for about 1 to 2 secs, it'll then power up (normally)

All these pins are in a row
..
..PWR
..
..RST
..
..LED
That's an example (I haven't checked the manual on the exact sequence)

I put an old motherboard into its old case and I connected all of the power cords back in ( LED, RST, PWR, Speaker, ect.) and I connected the new PSU into the motherboard.
I plugged the PSU in and nothing happened. I pressed the power button on the tower and the PSU turned on, fans and everything.
So I know for a fact that the PSU is fine.
I think I need to get a certain power switch for the motherboard...

Also, is there a little green light on every motherboard that shows that it is getting power or is that for only certain motherboard? Because I'm not seeing a little green light on the new motherboard...

I did try using screw drivers but that didn't seem to work...

That's great

The screwdriver option may have had to have better and longer contact, but who cares now!

The little green light, I had a lot of detail on this once, but I'll just answer your question.
No not on all motherboards

Also the LED connectors must be around the right way to work, but the PWR and RST don't matter. So if you don't see the LED activity or power, that is why.

Anyway, great news.

Have a lovely day. :)

That was quick!

Turn off the computer
Turn off the monitor too (but usually this won't matter)
Remove the power cord from the back fully
Hold the front power on button in for 30 secs
Let go of the button
Put the power cord back in (securely)
Turn on the Monitor (if it was off)
Turn on the computer

Presto!

Oh geez...
I didn't have the ATX Power Source Connector plugged in!

Sorry about that! The stupidity of a novice computer builder... LOL!

What should I do first??

OK so you have

1 ATA Hard Drive
and 2 SATA CD/DVD Drives

And no floppy ! (if you do have a floppy drive the data cable may be in the wrong way around)

Anyway,

Yes hit DEL (And go into CMOS)

Disable Floppy if you don't have a floppy drive

Go to the boot up sequence and select
1st Bootable Device=Cdrom (or it may actually say the CD/DVD drive)
2nd Bootable Device=HDD
3rd Bootable Device=Cdrom (or it may actually say the CD/DVD drive)

Save and Exit (F10)

Now, you should be right at the start
(by the way are you installing Windows - or is it already installed, can't remember what you said, and presently I'm in the post!!)

Allow the computer to startup

alright I got XP installed on the new hard drive!
Something is wrong with the old one though... I'll have to reinstall windows on that one tomarrow.

Thank you SOOOOOO much for your help Kimsland!!

I'f I have any more questions I'll ask!

Thanks again! :D :D :D

Need a sound card?

Hey Kimsland,
I tried to connect speakers on the new computer but there was no sound. I went into controle panel a for some reason It wouldn't let me change anything.
No error thing came up or anything. Do I have to put in a sound card or something?

If you can't change anything, that means the sound driver is not installed.

You will need to locate the sound driver for that system
