Windows for Games?

I would like to know what windows the best is for games.
I'm thinking off the following options:
Windows XP (games and work)
or
Windows 2000 (games and work)
or
Windows 98/Windows 2000 (games/work)

I'm going to use all the tweaks available on the Techspot site.

Maybe it would be best to seperate work and gaming.
So this means that programs like antivirus, etc. are not needed in a gaming environment.
But in a working environment it is recommended.

So what are your opinions?

I guess it depends what you mean by work....?

Are you just wanting Anti-Virus and using an office suite or are you doing AutoCAD or 3D Rendering or Sound Editing?

I'd personally reccomned WinXP. Simply because I know XP is very stable, where as I've never ran 2000 before. If you do go XP, turn off all its looks. Such as shadows, set the theme to defult (2000/98's look).

Just my .02c :)

Win2000 won't run (or even install) some older games such as System Shock 2, but WinXP works just fine. I'd go with XP, which is also current, and not obsolete like some of the others.

agissi: I also have my desktop set to 'windows classic', as the standard XP theme is well over the top.

If you already have win 2k go with it. If you are going to buy new may as well go with XP. I run 2k myself and don't have any problems playing games. I have one or two that need the compatibility mode, once enabled they play fine. Compatibility mode isn't installed by default for 2k but it's not hard to enable.

Compatibility Mode

Insert your Windows 2000 CD. Open the Support folder on the CD.
Double click the APCOMPAT.EXE file. This will load the Application Compatibility utility.
In the Start the following program tab enter the location of the setup/executable file you wish to run, e.g. C:\Sin\Sin.exe.
Select the Operating System you need to use, e.g. Windows 98.
Click Ok to attempt to run the program.

Compatibility Mode

This is a function built into Windows® XP, and added to
Windows® 2000 as of service pack 2.

(To enable it on Windows® 2000, execute the command
''regsvr32 %systemroot%\apppatch\slayerui.dll''
from the Run prompt or a command console(without the quotes). You will need
Administrator priveledges to enable this. Service Pack 2 or higher must be
installed. This will add a tab to execution shortcuts called 'Compatibility'.
You may want to check first to see if compatibility mode is already available.
Do not do this in Windows® XP -- you already have it active by default.)
